New Orleans City Council
The New Orleans City Council is the legislative branch of the City of New Orleans, Louisiana, United States. The current mayor-council form of city government was created in 1954, following the 1950 amendment of the state constitution that provided for a home rule charter for the city. The 1954 Charter provided for seven members, five elected from single-member districts, and two elected at-large, replacing the 1912 Charter, which provided for a commission form of government with a mayor and four commissioners. The council members are elected to four-year terms, using the two-round system. The President and the Vice President of the Council are chosen by the council at its organizational meeting on the day members take office following the election. The President is elected from the two at-large members; any of the other members of the Council may be elected Vice President. Helena Nancy Moreno (born September 30, 1977) is a Mexican-American realtot, equestrienne, former journalist, and politician serving as the president of the New Orleans City Council and First Division Councilmember-at-Large. Moreno was formerly a Democratic Party (United States), Democratic member of the Louisiana House of Representatives, where she represented the District 93. She was first elected in May 2010 during a special election and was unopposed in her re-election in the fall of 2011. Moon Landrieu
Moon Edwin Landrieu (born Maurice Edwin Landrieu; July 23, 1930 – September 5, 2022) was an American lawyer and politician who served as the 56th mayor of New Orleans from 1970 to 1978. A member of the Democratic Party, he represented New Orleans' Twelfth Ward in the Louisiana House of Representatives from 1960 to 1966, served on the New Orleans City Council as a member at-large from 1966 to 1970, and was the United States Secretary of Housing and Urban Development under U.S. president Jimmy Carter from 1979 to 1981. Cynthia Willard-Lewis
Cynthia W. Willard-Lewis (born 1952) is an American politician in Louisiana. A Democrat from New Orleans, Louisiana, she served briefly in the Louisiana State Senate and for longer periods in the Louisiana House of Representatives and on the New Orleans City Council. She was elected from Senate District 2 in a special election held on October 2, 2010, to replace Ann Duplessis, who resigned to take a position in the administration of Mayor Mitch Landrieu. Displaced by redistricting, Willard-Lewis ran in the nonpartisan blanket primary held on October 22, 2011, for the District 3 seat in the state Senate. She was instead defeated by another Democrat, the incumbent senator, Jean-Paul Morrell, who polled 11,280 votes (53.3 percent) to Willard-Lewis' 9,911 votes (46.8 percent). Troy Carter (politician)
Troy Anthony Carter (born October 26, 1963) is an American politician serving as the U.S. representative for Louisiana's 2nd congressional district since 2021. He was previously a member of the Louisiana State Senate for the 7th district. Suzanne Haik Terrell
Suzanne Haik Terrell (born July 8, 1954) is the first and only Republican woman elected to statewide office in Louisiana. A practicing attorney, Terrell was the state's final commissioner of elections, a position which she held from 2000 to 2004. In 2002, she was the Republican nominee for United States Senate, losing a hotly contested and closely watched race against incumbent Senator Mary Landrieu. In 2005, U.S. President George W. Dorothy Mae Taylor
Dorothy Mae DeLavallade Taylor (August 10, 1928 – August 18, 2000), was an educator and politician in New Orleans, the first African-American woman to be elected to and serve in the Louisiana House of Representatives. From 1971 to 1980, she represented District 20, since renumbered, in her native New Orleans. She had started her career as a teacher in the Head Start Program, designed to benefit children in their early years. She was also active in civil rights in the 1950s and 1960s, gaining more resources for facilities for African Americans in the city. James Milton Singleton (born 1931 in Hazlehurst, Mississippi), a prime mover in the New Orleans political organization BOLD (Black Organization for Leadership Development) and previously served on the nine-member Louisiana Gaming Control Board, having been nominated for the position by Xavier University of Louisiana president Norman Francis and appointed by Governor Bobby Jindal. James Bryan Wagner, known as Bryan Wagner (March 2, 1943 – July 29, 2018), was the first Republican since Reconstruction to have been elected to the New Orleans City Council.
