State Road 186 (NM 186) is a , paved, two-lane state highway in Doña Ana County in the U.S. state of New Mexico. NM 186's eastern terminus is south of Chamberino at the road's junction with NM 28. The road's western terminus is west of Anthony at the road's junction with Levee Road FL 5872 on the eastern bank of the Rio Grande. The road continues further east as West Ohara Road until its junction with NM 478. NM 186 is also known as West Ohara Road. Route description The highway begins at the junction with NM 28 south of Chamberino. The road heads east-northeast through pecan orchards and fields of Mesilla Valley and after approximately 0.7 miles crosses La Union Main Canal. At NM 186 passes by Anthony Country Club, then crosses the Rio Grande over a bridge, built in 1957. Anthony is a city in Doña Ana County, New Mexico, United States. The population was 9,360 at the 2010 census. It is located on the New Mexico–Texas state line in the Upper Mesilla Valley (immediately north of Anthony, Texas), and on Interstate 10, 24 miles south of Las Cruces and 18 miles north of El Paso, Texas. Doña Ana County is located in the southern part of the State of New Mexico, United States. As of the 2020 U.S. Census, its population was 219,561, which makes it the second-most populated county in New Mexico. New Mexico State Road 28 (NM 28) is a paved, two-lane state highway in Doña Ana County, in the U.S. state of New Mexico. It travels south-to-north roughly paralleling the Rio Grande. The southern terminus of NM 28 is at the Texas state line west of Canutillo where Farm to Market Road 259 (FM 259; Canutillo La Union Avenue) ends. New Mexico State Road 478
State Road 478 (NM 478) is a state highway located entirely within Doña Ana County, New Mexico. Starting in Anthony and ending in Las Cruces, NM 478 was once a section of historic US 80, a major transcontinental highway between San Diego, California and Savannah, Georgia. In 1946, it also became part of U.S. Route 85, when the latter highway was extended south to the Mexican border in El Paso, Texas. US 80 and US 85 were rerouted onto a newer alignment to the east in the mid 1950s. This was also around the time the older highway was designated NM 478. For two years, the southern terminus of NM 478 also served as the national western terminus of US 80 until that highway was removed from New Mexico completely in 1991. Mesilla Valley
The Mesilla Valley is a geographic feature of Southern New Mexico and far West Texas. It was formed by repeated heavy spring floods of the Rio Grande. Background The fertile Mesilla Valley extends from Radium Springs, New Mexico, to the west side of El Paso, Texas. The valley is characterized by its few remaining bosques, as well as its native Populus sect.
