New Media Distribution/Irjax Enterprises was a comic book distributor and publisher active from the mid-1970s to the mid-1980s. In 1978, the company's legal actions against the dominant distributor of the era, Sea Gate Distributors, widened the field for the direct market to expand. In 1982, when Irjax's distribution arm went out of business, its processing centers and warehouses formed the basis for Diamond Comics Distributors, the now-dominant comics distributor. The company's publishing arm, New Media, continued in the business until 1995. New Media mainly published periodicals for comics/fantasy/science fiction enthusiasts, including the long-running critical journal ''Comics Feature.'' Richard Howell (comics)
Richard Howell (born November 16, 1955) is an American comics artist best known as the co-founder and editor of Claypool Comics. Career Richard Howell entered the comics industry in 1977 with his self-published series ''Portia Prinz of the Glamazons''. Beginning in 1980, he and his partner Carol Kalish co-edited the New Media/Irjax line of magazines. They also ran the New Media/Irjax-owned Boston-area distributor Solar Spice and Liquors, named after a fictional corporation created by science fiction writer Poul Anderson. Howell replaced Peter B. Gillis as editorial director of New Media/Irjax in June 1981. Howell began working for Marvel Comics in 1982 and DC Comics in 1983. Writer Tony Isabella and Howell produced ''The Shadow War of Hawkman'' limited series in 1985 and an ongoing ''Hawkman'' series the following year. Seuling was the organizer of the annual New York Comic Art Convention, originally held in New York City every July 4 weekend throughout the 1970s. Later, with his Sea Gate Distributors company, Seuling developed the concept of the direct market distribution system for getting comics directly into comic book specialty shops, bypassing the then established newspaper/magazine distributor method, where no choices of title, quantity, or delivery directions were permitted. Carol Kalish (February 14, 1955Kraft, David Anthony. 1984, "Sales Director Carol Kalish: Marvel's Direct Sales Manager Tells Her Side," ''Comics Interview'', vol. 1, no. 18, pp. 57-71. – September 5, 1991) was an American writer, editor, comic book retailer, and sales manager. She worked as Direct Sales Manager and Vice President of New Product Development at Marvel Comics from 1981 to 1991. She is credited with pioneering the American comics direct market when it was in its adolescence, in part through a program wherein Marvel helped pay for comic book stores to acquire cash registers. She was the winner of an Inkpot Award in 1991, and in 2010 was posthumously awarded the first ComicsPRO Industry Appreciation Award, beating nominees such as Will Eisner, Julius Schwartz and Phil Seuling.
