New Leaves is the fifth studio album by Chicago artist Mike Kinsella under the name Owen. Background and release On February 13, 2009, "New Leaves" was posted on Owen's Myspace account. It was mentioned that Owen was in process of writing and demoing for their next album. On July 23, 2009, ''New Leaves'' was announced for release in two months' time. Alongside this, the album's artwork and track listing was posted online. On September 16, 2009, a music video was released for "Good Friends, Bad Habits". Owen (band)
Owen is a solo project of Mike Kinsella, and part of the Chicago, Illinois indie rock scene. Kinsella is one of the dominant and influential figures in the Chicago indie scene, having also led the band American Football, and played in the bands Cap'n Jazz, Joan of Arc, The One Up Downstairs and Owls, and most recently Their / They're / There. Owen is known for its soft melodies, complex acoustics, combining lead acoustics with keyboard and other guitars, plaintive vocals and drums. It can be seen as a natural progression for Kinsella, from the progressive and experimental severity of Joan of Arc via the more melodic-progressive American Football. Career Owen's debut, ''Owen'' was a stark departure from previous Mike Kinsella projects. Indie Rock
Indie rock is a Music subgenre, subgenre of rock music that originated in the United States, United Kingdom and New Zealand from the 1970s to the 1980s. Originally used to describe independent record labels, the term became associated with the music they produced and was initially used interchangeably with alternative rock or "Pop rock, guitar pop rock". Brian Deck
Brian Deck is an American music producer and member of band Red Red Meat. He co-founded Idful Studios in 1988. Since becoming a full-time producer, Deck has worked with bands and artists including Modest Mouse, Iron & Wine, Califone, All Smiles, Fruit Bats, Gomez, The Grates, Holopaw, Baby & Hide, David Singer and David Berkeley. Brian currently works at Narwhal Studios (formerly Engine Studios) in Chicago. Musician Brian Deck attended college as a performance major and excelled at both drum set and general percussion instruments. On many of the albums Brian produces, he contributes some sort of instrument or vocal. Many of his albums include extensive percussion instruments and techniques. While recording the band Red Red Meat at Idful Studios he was asked to join the band behind the kit. He remained there until the bands disbanding in early 2000. Mike Kinsella
Mike Kinsella (born March 4, 1977) is an American musician and singer-songwriter. Having been involved in many Illinois-based bands, he is best known as the lead vocalist and guitarist of the emo band American Football. Kinsella's first musical project was serving as drummer for the band Cap'n Jazz, which he co-founded with his brother Tim. With either Tim and/or cousin Nate Kinsella, he has also participated in the projects Owls and Joan of Arc. In 2001, Kinsella began his current solo project, Owen, in which he performs vocals, guitar, bass, drums, keyboards, loops, etc. Kinsella was also in a band called The Shirts and Skins, with his wife.
