New Kru Town
New Kru Town is a northwestern coastal suburb of Monrovia, Liberia. Overview New Kru Town is a northwestern coastal suburb of Monrovia, located on the north end of Bushrod Island. It is the only borough in Liberia. The town grew as a planned "transplant" town of Old Kru Town after World War II when "Old Kru Town was evacuated for the development of a new breakwater for the new port with assistance from the Liberian government". Being located on the corner of the Atlantic Ocean and the Saint Paul River estuary, fishing is an important source of income. A slum area, it has been subject to ethnic tensions. Squatted houses are built in precarious zones and in 2013, 200 homes were washed away by a high tide. In 2019 President George Weah appointed Tarpeh D. West Point was founded in Monrovia in the 1950s and is estimated to house between 29,500 and 75,000 people. During the First Liberian Civil War 1989–1997 and the Second Liberian Civil War 1999–2003, many people in Liberia were displaced and some ended up squatting in Monrovia. Thomas Nimene Botoe (December 25, 1912 – August 20, 1969) was a Liberian politician, Governor of the Kru Community in Monrovia. During the presidency of William V.S. Tubman, he was accused of a role in "The Plot That Failed". Along with Nettie-Sie Brownell, Gbaflen Davies, and S. William Tolbert
William Richard Tolbert Jr. (13 May 1913 – 12 April 1980) was a Liberian politician who served as the 20th president of Liberia from 1971 until 1980. Tolbert was an Americo-Liberian and trained as a civil servant before entering the House of Representatives in 1943 for the True Whig Party, then the only established party in Liberia. Tolbert was elected the 23rd vice president of Liberia to William Tubman in 1952 and served in that position until he became President following Tubman's death in 1971. The Saint Paul River is a river of western Africa. Its headwaters are in southeastern Guinea.
