New Jersey Route S56
Route 87 is a state highway located in Atlantic County, New Jersey, Atlantic County in the U.S. state of New Jersey. It runs , heading north from Atlantic City, New Jersey, Atlantic City at an intersection with U.S. Route 30 in New Jersey, U.S. Route 30 to Brigantine, New Jersey, Brigantine, where it terminates at the end of the Brigantine Bridge over the Absecon Inlet, continuing as County Route 638. In Atlantic City, the route runs through the Marina District, which contains a few casinos, along Huron Avenue and Brigantine Boulevard. Here, Route 87 intersects with New Jersey Route 187, Route 187 and the Atlantic City-Brigantine Connector, the latter providing a limited-access route between Route 87 and the Atlantic City Expressway. Route 87 is the only road to and from Brigantine. What is now Route 87 was initially proposed as Route S4A in 1927, running from Tuckerton, New Jersey, Tuckerton south through Brigantine to Atlantic City. The South Jersey Transportation Authority (SJTA) is a quasi-private agency created by the New Jersey Legislature in 1991 to manage transportation-related services in the six southern New Jersey counties: Atlantic, Camden, Cape May, Cumberland, Gloucester, and Salem. The Authority, successor to the New Jersey Expressway Authority and the Atlantic County Transportation Authority (ACTA), is responsible for coordinating South Jersey's transportation system, including highways, airports and other transportation needs. The Authority's transportation network includes public highways, including the Atlantic City Expressway, and transportation projects, such as the Atlantic City International Airport; parking facilities and functions once performed by ACTA; other public transportation facilities, and related economic development facilities in South Jersey.
