NH 116 is a scenic rural highway stretching from Haverhill, which lies along the Connecticut River, to Jefferson, in the White Mountains Region. The southern terminus is at NH 10 in the village of North Haverhill and the northern terminus is at U.S. Route 2, near the Santa's Village amusement park. North Haverhill is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in the town of Haverhill in Grafton County, New Hampshire, United States. It is one of several villages in the town of Haverhill, which is the county seat of Grafton County. As of the 2020 census, North Haverhill had a population of 843. The village is centered on the junction of New Hampshire Routes 10 and 116, on a bluff overlooking the Connecticut River, the western boundary of New Hampshire. It is situated in the middle of a fertile agricultural area at the western base of the White Mountains. Benton is a town in Grafton County, New Hampshire, United States. The population was 374 at the 2020 census. Located in the White Mountains, Benton is largely surrounded by the White Mountain National Forest. The town is crossed by the Appalachian Trail. History The town was granted by Governor Benning Wentworth on January 31, 1764, to Theophilus Fitch and others. It was named "Coventry" after Coventry, Connecticut, hometown to many of the settlers, who arrived shortly after the beginning of the Revolution. At the suggestion of Governor Isaac Hill, the name was changed on December 4, 1840, to Benton, in honor of Thomas Hart Benton, the Missouri senator who championed American westward expansion. With a rough and mountainous terrain, the town was not suited for agriculture. But Benton had water power sites and abundant forests. New Hampshire Route 142 (abbreviated NH 142) is a north–south state highway in northern New Hampshire. The highway runs between Franconia in the White Mountains Region to Dalton in the upper Connecticut River valley. The southern terminus of NH 142 is at the junction with New Hampshire Route 18 in Franconia. The highway winds north through Bethlehem and Whitefield, then turns northwest to Dalton. Ammonoosuc River
The Ammonoosuc River is a river in northwestern New Hampshire in the United States. It is a tributary of the Connecticut River, which flows to Long Island Sound. ''Ammonoosuc'' is Abnaki for "small, narrow fishing place". The Ammonoosuc rises on the western slope of Mount Washington, in Sargent's Purchase in the White Mountains of southern Coos County. One branch of the river is the outlet of the Lakes of the Clouds in the saddle between Mount Washington and Mount Monroe. Leaving the vicinity of the Presidential Range, the river flows westwardly into Grafton County, where it turns southwestwardly. Along its course the Ammonoosuc passes through Chandler's Purchase, Bean's Grant, and Crawford's Purchase; and the towns of Carroll, Bethlehem, Littleton, Lisbon, Landaff, Bath, and Haverhill to the village of Woodsville, where it flows into the Connecticut River. Littleton is a census-designated place (CDP) and the main village in the town of Littleton in Grafton County, New Hampshire, United States. The population of the CDP was 4,467 at the 2020 census, out of 6,005 in the entire town. Geography The CDP is in the eastern part of the town of Littleton, on both sides of the Ammonoosuc River and extending north to include Parker Mountain. The CDP is bordered to the southeast by the town of Bethlehem and to the southwest by Interstate 93. Rocks Estate
The Rocks Estate, also known as the John Jacob Glessner Estate, is a historic summer estate in Bethlehem, New Hampshire. The large estate, covering more than , is located near the junction of U.S. Route 302 and Interstate 93, and includes some twenty buildings. The estate was assembled by John Jacob Glessner (whose Chicago residence is a National Historic Landmark designed by H. H. Richardson) in the 1880s, and is one of the largest and best-preserved surviving private estates in the state. Glessner created The Rocks as a private conservation initiative, to prevent destructive farming methods from destroying the land. The large Shingle-style house he had built in 1883 no longer stands, but a significant number of outbuildings survive, including a carriage house, horse barn, and a sawmill/pigpen building in a cluster of buildings located generally northward of the former house site. Gale River
The Gale River is a tributary of the Ammonoosuc River in northwestern New Hampshire in the United States. Via the Ammonoosuc, it is part of the watershed of the Connecticut River, which flows to Long Island Sound. The Gale River flows for its entire length in Grafton County. It rises in the White Mountains in the town of Franconia as two short, northward-flowing streams: its North Branch and its South Branch. The two streams join in Bethlehem, and the Gale River flows thence generally westwardly. Returning to Franconia, the river collects the Ham Branch, its most significant tributary, then passes through Sugar Hill to Lisbon, where it joins the Ammonoosuc River. New Hampshire Route 18 is a state highway in northwestern New Hampshire. It is a local road serving Franconia, Bethlehem, and Littleton, New Hampshire, which I-93 bypasses. Its northern extension, Vermont Route 18, continues northward from the Connecticut River to St. Johnsbury, Vermont. NH 18 closely parallels I-93 for its entire length and has several interchanges with the Interstate highway. The highway winds across the state, connecting Bath to Conway through the heart of the scenic and mountainous White Mountain National Forest.
