New Goshen, Indiana
New Goshen is a census-designated place (CDP) in Fayette Township, Vigo County, in the U.S. state of Indiana. It is part of the Terre Haute Metropolitan Statistical Area. History New Goshen was platted and laid out May 17, 1853, by Hamilton Smith, William Ferguson, George Smith and John Hay. As of 1890 the population was approximately 180. Future U.S. Senator Birch Bayh was a resident and graduated from New Goshen High; New Goshen High closed in 1959 and was consolidated into today's West Vigo High School. The post office at New Goshen has been in operation since 1851. Geography New Goshen is located at at an elevation of 643 feet. West Terre Haute is a town in Sugar Creek Township, Vigo County, Indiana, on the western side of the Wabash River near Terre Haute. The population was 2,236 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Terre Haute Metropolitan Statistical Area. Bethany Congregational Church was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2003. History Originally called McQuilkinsville, then simply Macksville or Maxville, West Terre Haute was laid out by Samuel McQuilkin on November 22, 1836. The first building had been put up in 1833, and in 1834 McQuilkin opened a general store on the National Road between present-day Third and Fourth Streets. The store proved useful to those working on the National Road and made McQuilkinsville an important town in the area. Paris is a city in Edgar County, Illinois, south of Chicago and west of Indianapolis. The population was 8,291 at the 2020 census. It is the county seat and largest city of Edgar County. History Paris was established in 1826 on land donated by Samuel Vance to be the county seat, and was incorporated as a village in 1849. The town most likely received its name from the word "Paris" carved into a jack-oak tree in the middle of what became the town. Paris's history includes the service of two brothers, Walter Booth and Newton Booth, as its mayors in the mid-1850s. West Vigo High School is a public high school located in West Terre Haute, Indiana. As the name implies, the school's district covers the western portion of Vigo County. It is the only school in Indiana that has a dome, called the Green Dome. The middle school is connected with the high school. Birch Evans Bayh Jr. (; January 22, 1928 – March 14, 2019) was an American Democratic Party politician who served as U.S. Senator from Indiana from 1963 to 1981. He was first elected to office in 1954, when he won election to the Indiana House of Representatives; in 1958, he was elected Speaker, the youngest person to hold that office in the state's history.
