Baron Emile Beaumont D'Erlanger
Baron Emile Beaumont D'Erlanger (4 June 1866 – 24 July 1939) was a French-born British merchant banker. Life He was the second eldest son of Frédéric Emile d'Erlanger, a banker working in Paris at the French branch of Emile Erlanger and Company and Marguerite Mathilde Slidell (1842–1927). His older brother, Baron Raphael Slidell d'Erlanger, who might have been more likely to follow his father into banking, was instead a scientist and professor at Heidelberg. Emile followed the banking route and from his father he was entrusted with presidency of the railway and tramway companies including the New General Traction Company in England. Coventry Corporation Tramways operated a tramway service in Coventry, England, between 1912 and 1940. History Coventry and District Tramways Company The Coventry and District Tramways Company successfully promoted a bill in 1881 to construct tramways between Coventry station and Bedworth. A proposed extension to Nuneaton was withdrawn owing to opposition. The track was laid in 1883 and initial steam powered services started in 1884. Trial trips by the steam tram were run in August 1884 from the depot at Foleshill to Coventry, and then to Bedworth. The tramway opened soon afterwards but as anticipated by the inspector, there was difficulty in turning the sharp corner at the top of Bishop Street where the lines became double. On Monday 22 September 1884 an engine and car running up Bishop Street became locked in the points and it took repeated attempts to get the engine round the curve. Norwich Electric Tramways served the city of Norwich in Norfolk from 30 July 1900 until 10 December 1935. History The Norwich Electric Tramways company was a subsidiary of the New General Traction Company. Construction work started in June 1898 and first routes opened in July 1900. An electricity generating station was built on Duke Street to supply power for the scheme. The tram depot was on Silver Road. The network was essentially complete and fully operational by the end of 1901, but there were minor additions and changes in 1918 and 1919. Infrastructure The network was radial, with routes based around the hub in Orford Place .
