New Brunswick Southwest (french: Nouveau-Brunswick-Sud-Ouest; formerly known as Charlotte and St. Croix—Belleisle) is a federal electoral district in New Brunswick, Canada, that has been represented in the House of Commons of Canada since 2004. Its population in 2016 was 65,287. Political geography As the name implies, the district comprises the southwestern portion of New Brunswick. It includes all of Charlotte County and portions of York, Sunbury, Queens, Kings and Saint John Counties. Major towns include St. Stephen, St. Andrews, St. George, Grand Bay–Westfield, McAdam, Harvey Station, Fredericton Junction, Gagetown, and the Kingsclear and Hanwell regions near Fredericton. The neighbouring ridings are Tobique—Mactaquac, Fredericton, Fundy Royal, and Saint John. "Charlotte" riding was created in 1867. In 1966, it was merged into Carleton—Charlotte. John Williamson (Canadian Politician)
John S. L. Williamson (born January 30, 1970) is a Canadian politician who has represented the riding of New Brunswick Southwest in the House of Commons of Canada as a member of the Conservative Party of Canada since 2019. He represented the riding from 2011 until his defeat in the 2015 election. He was elected again in the 2019 election. Education Williamson graduated from Fredericton High School, and then McGill University with a degree in economics and political science. He later went on to receive a master's degree in economic history at the London School of Economics. Fredericton Junction (2016 population: 704) is a Canadian village in Sunbury County, New Brunswick. Located on the North Branch of the Oromocto River in the western part of the county, the village is approximately southwest of Fredericton. History The community was originally named Hartt's Mills but was renamed in 1869 when the European and North American Railway (Western Extension) was opened between Saint John and Vanceboro, Maine, meeting the Fredericton Branch Railway which ran from this junction into Fredericton. The federal electoral redistribution of 2012 was a redistribution of electoral districts ("ridings") in Canada following the results of the 2011 Canadian census. As a result of amendments to the Constitution Act, 1867, the number of seats in the House of Commons of Canada increased from 308 to 338. The previous electoral redistribution was in 2003. Background and previous attempts at reform Prior to 2012, the redistribution rules for increasing the number of seats in the House of Commons of Canada was governed by section 51 of the ''Constitution Act, 1867'', as last amended in 1985. Fredericton (formerly Fredericton—York—Sunbury) is a federal electoral district in New Brunswick, Canada, that has been represented in the House of Commons of Canada since 1988. Its population in 2021 was 87,436. Its predecessor riding, York—Sunbury, was represented in the House of Commons from 1917 to 1988. Following the 2022 Canadian federal electoral redistribution, the riding will be re-named Fredericton—Oromocto, at the first election held after approximately April 2024. Its border with Tobique—Mactaquac will be rerouted to follow the northern border of the City of Fredericton (2023 borders), and it will lose the remainder of the Parishes of Maugerville, Sheffield and Canning to Miramichi—Grand Lake; and will lose Burton Parish to Saint John—St. Croix, except for those parts of the parish that will be transferred to the Town of Oromocto in 2023. Carleton—Charlotte was a federal electoral district in New Brunswick, Canada, that was represented in the House of Commons of Canada from 1968 to 1997. The riding was created in the redistribution of electoral districts in 1966. It consisted of the counties of Carleton and Charlotte, as well as southern portions of York and Sunbury Counties. Charlotte County was formerly its own electoral district, while Carleton County was part of the Victoria—Carleton riding. In the 1996 redistribution, Carleton—Charlotte was abolished. Tobique—Mactaquac is a federal electoral district in New Brunswick, Canada, that has been represented in the House of Commons of Canada since 1997. Political geography The district includes the counties of Carleton and Victoria as well as the Parish and Village of Saint-André and the eastern part of the County of York (excluding the City of Fredericton and vicinity). The neighbouring ridings are Madawaska—Restigouche, Miramichi, Fredericton, and New Brunswick Southwest. Across the border to Maine, it neighbours the Maine District 2 of the United States House of Representatives.
