New Bridge, Oregon
New Bridge (or Newbridge) is an unincorporated community in Baker County, Oregon, about three miles north of Richland and Oregon Route 86. Its elevation is . History New Bridge was founded on the banks of Eagle Creek near an important bridge built across the stream in pioneer times. Joseph Gale was the first postmaster of New Bridge post office, which ran from 1878 until 1967. The town was originally in Union County until 1901, when the boundaries were changed to eliminate the panhandle in which New Bridge was located. New Bridge was platted in 1908, "only after irreversible decline had set in". American Pioneer
American pioneers were European American and African American settlers who migrated westward from the Thirteen Colonies and later United States to settle in and develop areas of North America that had previously been inhabited or used by Native Americans. Sparta, Oregon
Sparta is an unincorporated community in Baker County, Oregon, United States. It was named for Sparta, Illinois, by William H. Packwood, a prominent Oregon pioneer who visited the gold diggings at the Powder River there in 1871. By 1873, the population was 300 and the town had a general store, a hotel, a meat market, and a brewery; food came from the nearby Eagle Valley. The town was platted in 1872, and the post office was established in 1872 and ran until 1952. The post office was originally named "Gem" in 1871 and was moved about a mile east when it was renamed Sparta to match the established community. The locale was also known as "Eagle City". Eagle Valley (Oregon)
The Eagle Valley is a farming and timber-producing region in northeastern Oregon in the United States. Located along the Snake River and its tributaries, the valley forms part of historic region of Baker County near the Idaho border. The largest community in the Eagle Valley is Richland. The unincorporated communities of New Bridge and Sparta are also located in the area of Eagle Valley. The valley forms a relatively isolated enclave southeast of the Wallowa-Whitman National Forest. A salient (also known as a panhandle or bootheel) is an elongated protrusion of a geopolitical entity, such as a subnational entity or a sovereign state. Union County, Oregon
Union County is one of the 36 counties in the U.S. state of Oregon. As of the 2020 census, the population was 26,196. Its county seat is La Grande. Joseph Gale
Joseph Goff Gale (April 29, 1807 – December 13, 1881) was an American pioneer, trapper, entrepreneur, and politician who contributed to the early settlement of the Oregon Country. There he assisted in the construction of the first sailing vessel built in what would become the state of Oregon, sailed the ship to California to trade for cattle, and later served as one of three co-executives ("governors") in the Provisional Government of Oregon. Originally a sailor, he also spent time in the fur trade, as a farmer, and a gold miner in the California Gold Rush. Early life Joseph Gale was born in Washington, D.C., on April 29, 1807, the son of Mary Gale (née Goff) and Joseph Gale, a sea captain from Pennsylvania.
