Neville Hogan (rugby League)
Neville Hogan also known as "Noel Hogan" was an Australian rugby league footballer who played in the 1940s. He played for Western Suburbs in the New South Wales Rugby League (NSWRL) competition. Playing career Hogan made his first grade debut for Western Suburbs in 1946. That season, the club ran second last on the table. The following year, Wests appointed Frank Burge as head coach. The club would go on to finish 4th and make the finals. Hogan played in the semi-final defeat against Balmain. Hogan was also selected to play for New South Wales and featured in one interstate game against Queensland. The following season, Hogan was part of the Western Suburbs side which won the minor premiership and reached the 1948 NSWRL grand final against Balmain. Hogan played at halfback in the match as Balmain went into halftime holding a 5-3 lead. Western Suburbs Magpies
The Western Suburbs Magpies (legal name: Western Suburbs District Rugby League Football Club Ltd) are an Australian rugby league football club based in the western suburbs of Sydney, New South Wales. Formed in 1908, Wests, as they are commonly referred to, were one of the nine foundation clubs of the first New South Wales Rugby League competition in Australia. The club, as a sole entity, departed the top-flight competition in 1999 after forming a 50–50 joint venture with Balmain Tigers to form the Wests Tigers. The club currently fields sides in the NSW State Cup (Canterbury Cup), Ron Massey Cup (Opens), S.G. Ball Cup (Under 18's) and Harold Matthews Cup (Under 16's) competitions. Keith Holman
Keith Victor Holman, MBE (11 September 1927 – 11 October 2011) was an Australian Rugby League footballer, a national and state representative whose club career was played with Western Suburbs from 1949 to 1961. He has since been named as one of the nation's finest footballers of the 20th century. After retiring as player, Holman was coach of Wests and later became one of the game's top-level referees. He was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in 1977. Background Holman was born in Ballarat, Australia. Early years and war service Holman had an impoverished childhood during the Great Depression. New South Wales Rugby League Team
The New South Wales rugby league team has represented the Australian state of New South Wales in rugby league football since the sport's beginnings there in 1907. Also known as the Blues due to their sky blue jerseys, the team competes in the annual State of Origin series. This annual event is a series of three games competing for the State of Origin shield. As of 2022, the team is coached by Brad Fittler and captained by James Tedesco. Prior to 1980 when the "state-of-origin" selection criteria were introduced, the New South Wales team, in addition to playing annually against Queensland, played matches against foreign touring sides and occasionally toured overseas themselves. The Sydney Sports Ground No. 1 was a Stadium and Dirt track racing venue in Sydney, New South Wales. The ground was located where the car park of the Sydney Football Stadium (SFS) currently sits. The ground had two main grandstands and was surrounded by a grass covered hill, giving it a capacity of more than 35,000. It was demolished along with the smaller No.2 Ground in 1986 to allow the building of the SFS, which opened in 1988. During its lifespan the Sports Ground hosted Rugby league, Rugby Union, Soccer, Motorcycle speedway and Speedway car racing. Kevin Hansen (rugby League)
Kevin Hansen (1927−1971) was an Australian professional rugby league footballer who played in the 1940s and 1950s. He played for Western Suburbs and Eastern Suburbs as a . Playing career Hansen made his debut for Western Suburbs in 1947. The following year he was a member of the Wests side which claimed their third premiership, defeating Balmain 8–5 in the grand final, with Hansen scoring the winning try. In 1952, Hansen won his second premiership with Western Suburbs and the club's fourth as they defeated South Sydney 22–12 in the 1952 grand final. This would be the last premiership Western Suburbs would win before exiting the competition in 1999.
