Neville Dawes
Neville Dawes (16 June 1926 – 13 May 1984) was a novelist and poet born in Nigeria of Jamaican parentage. He was the father of poet and editor Kwame Dawes. Biography Neville Augustus Dawes was born in Warri, Nigeria, to Jamaican parents Augustus Dawes (a Baptist missionary and teacher) and his wife Laura, and was raised in rural Jamaica, where the family returned when he was three years old.Barrie Davies"Dawes, Neville" in Eugene Benson and L. Warri
The city of Warri is an oil hub within South-South Nigeria and houses an annex of the Delta State Government House. Warri City is one of the major hubs of the petroleum industry in Nigeria. Warri and her twin city, Uvwie are the commercial capital of Delta State with a population of over 311,970 people in 2006. The city is the indigenous territory of Urhobo, itsekiri and Ijaw people. Gerald Moore (scholar)
Gerald Moore (22 August 1924 – 27 December 2022) was an English independent scholar. Biography Moore was born in Chiswick, London, to Rex Moore, an exhibitions officer, and his wife, Norah (nee Sturdee), an actor, on 22 August 1924. He went to Dauntsey's School in Wiltshire, and when he was 17 years old joined the Royal Navy, serving in the Atlantic and Arctic convoys during World War 2. He later studied at Emmanuel College, Cambridge, where he earned a first-class degree in English. Moore taught at many universities, including the Sussex, Hong Kong, Makerere, Ife, Port Harcourt, Jos and the University of Wisconsin-Madison. His last teaching post was at Trieste. He was primarily a scholar of contemporary African anglophone and francophone poetry. With Ulli Beier, he edited the influential ''Modern Poetry from Africa'' (1963), a comprehensive anthology, republished in 1984 as ''The Penguin Book of Modern African Poetry''. The ''Jamaica Journal'' is a peer-reviewed academic journal published by the Institute of Jamaica. It publishes scholarly articles on the history, natural history, art, literature, music, and culture of Jamaica. Its predecessor was the ''Journal of the Institute of Jamaica'', established in 1896. In 1967, the ''Jamaica Journal'' was established as a quarterly journal, "to reflect the Institute's interest in the development and promotion of Jamaica's history, literature, science and arts".
