Nevada State Route 789
State Route 789 (SR 789) is a state highway in Humboldt County, Nevada connecting the town of Golconda to nearby mining districts. Much of the route previously existed as State Route 18 prior to 1976. Route description SR 789 begins at the westbound entrance ramp to Interstate 80 in the town of Golconda. From there, the route travels southeast, paralleling the Interstate highway. After less than one mile (1.6 km), the route leaves the Golconda town limits. SR 789 parallels I-80 in its southeasterly direction for over two miles (3.2 km) before turning sharply to the northeast. The route passes through Emigrant Canyon, briefly paralleling the Humboldt River on its trek northward. Golconda, Nevada
Golconda is a census-designated place in southeastern Humboldt County, Nevada, United States. As of the 2010 census it had a population of 214. It is located along Interstate 80 on the Humboldt River in the northwestern part of the state. Golconda has a post office, which has been in operation since 1869. History Golconda was founded in 1869. The community was named for the ancient diamond mining center of Golkonda in India. The settlement had its start when discovery of copper, silver, gold, and lead brought entrepreneurs who opened mines and mills in the district. The town was a diverse society including both native-born European Americans as well as other groups including individuals of French, Portuguese, Paiute, and Chinese descent who all lived and worked in the small community. It was formed in 1903 as an attempt to break the near-monopoly the Southern Pacific Railroad had on rail service into northern California. Midas, Nevada
Midas is a small unincorporated community in Elko County, Nevada. Although its population has fluctuated greatly over the years and it often appears on internet ghost town lists, it has never been completely abandoned, and one can meet many of the living citizenry at the aptly named Ghost Town Saloon, its sole business. Alongside Jarbidge, the town was known as one of the biggest twentieth-century gold mining towns in Elko County. History Midas' history began with the town being named Gold Circle. In June 1907, James McDuffy discovered gold at the base of Owyhee Bluffs in Elko County, Nevada. Two towns, Gold Circle and Summit were quickly created in proximity thereto. Tuscarora, Nevada
Tuscarora (Shoshoni language: Tosa Konoki) is an unincorporated community in Elko County, Nevada, United States. The community lies on the east side of the Tuscarora Mountains approximately 40 miles north of Carlin. Tuscarora is part of the Elko Micropolitan Statistical Area. Far from being a ghost town, as several websites proclaim, Tuscarora is home to two schools, a library, a post office and a bar and grill, as well as homes for its very much alive residents. History Tuscarora was founded in Elko County after an expedition by trader William Heath to find gold, in 1867. The community derives its name from the Tuscarora people. As miners flocked to the town, a fort was built to offer protection from Indian raids and a water ditch was created to supply the town with water.
