State Route 400 (SR 400) is a state highway in central Pershing County, Nevada. It connects the rural town of Unionville to Mill City. The route originally extended further south under its prior designation as State Route 50. Route description The route starts at the beginning of pavement on Unionville Road, about east of the rural townsite of Unionville in Buena Vista Valley at Kyle Hot Springs Road. From there, SR 400 heads northward over Buena Vista Creek as it heads northward towards Coyote Ranch. The route parallels the Humboldt Range on its trek northward through the desert. The highway crosses over Star Creek and passes through the Dun Glen Flat as it heads into Mill City. State Route 400 comes to an end at the Mill City Interchange on Interstate 80 and U.S. Route 95. Mill City is an unincorporated community in Pershing County, Nevada, United States. The ZIP Code of Mill City is 89418. Mill City had its start as a mining community. The community was named for a quartz mill near the original town site. A post office called Mill City was in operation from 1864 until 1948. The community is four miles (6.4 km) north of Imlay on Interstate 80. Oreana, Nevada
Oreana is a ghost town in Pershing County, Nevada, United States. Oreana was a milling town from 1865-1885 and should not be confused with Oreana Station located 3 miles to the northeast on what was initially the Central Pacific Railway. The Montezuma Smelting Works was built at Oreana in 1857 to smelt ores from the Arabia and Trinity mining districts. The Montezuma smelter was the first lead smelter in the U.S. to ship lead commercially. Other lead smelters shipped their output locally. At one time, Oreana was larger than what was then known as "Lovelock's" (today known as Lovelock). However, Lovelock's became larger after Lovelock's successful bid for a Central Pacific station. Rochester, Nevada, was a silver-mining town in Pershing County, Nevada, USA, approximately east of Reno. It is now a ghost town. Lower Rochester is still accessible to visitors, but was largely destroyed by a wildfire in 2012; Upper Rochester has been buried under mine tailings of the more recent Coeur Rochester open pit mine. History Rochester is the collective name for three different sites: Rochester Heights, Upper Rochester and Lower Rochester, spread out along a stretch of Rochester Canyon. When gold was discovered here in the 1860s by immigrants from Rochester, New York, there was only one camp, at the upper end of the canyon.
