Netherwood Academy
Netherwood Academy (formerly Netherwood Advanced Learning Centre) is a secondary school located next to Netherwood Country Park, between Wombwell and Darfield in the Metropolitan Borough of Barnsley, South Yorkshire, England. The school was formed in 2012 from a merger of Wombwell High School and Darfield Foulstone School of Creative Arts. The new school is located on a new campus, which also has facilities for leisure and cultural activities and adult learning to be used by the local community. The school has a £35 million campus, built as part of Barnsley’s Building Schools for the Future programme. On 1 May 2017, the school converted to academy status and is sponsored by the Astrea Academy Trust. Academy (English School)
An academy school in England is a state-funded school which is directly funded by the Department for Education and independent of local authority control. The terms of the arrangements are set out in individual Academy Funding Agreements. Most academies are secondary schools, though slightly more than 25% of primary schools (4,363 as of December 2017) are academies. Northern Education Trust is a multi-academy trust operating in the North of England. It was established in 2010 and operates 22 academies; 10 primary and 12 secondary. Wombwell
Wombwell () is a town in the Metropolitan Borough of Barnsley in South Yorkshire, England. The town in the 2011 census was split between a ward called Wombwell, as well as small parts that fell under two other wards called Darfield (specifically the area south of Pitt Street, including Broomhill) and Stairfoot (specifically the area south of Aldham Crescent). Added together, these list the town's population as roughly 15,316. Historically within the West Riding of Yorkshire, its name's origin may mean "Womba's Well", or "well in a hollow". Wombwell railway station (formerly Wombwell West) serves the Penistone and Hallam lines. Until 1959 it had another station ( Wombwell Central) on the Barnsley-Doncaster line that was closed when that line lost its passenger service. Darfield is a village within the Barnsley (borough), Metropolitan Borough of Barnsley, South Yorkshire, England. It is Historic counties of England, historically part of the West Riding of Yorkshire. The village is situated approximately east from Barnsley town centre. Darfield had a population of 8,066 at the 2001 UK Census, increasing to 10,685 at the 2011 Census. Darfield Foulstone School of Creative Arts was a comprehensive school located in the village of Darfield, Barnsley, South Yorkshire. It was a specialist creative arts school, with approximately 900 pupils between the ages of 11 and 16 before closure. History The Foulstone Modern School was built on land in the centre of Darfield, previously occupied by a children's recreation ground and by well-cultivated allotments, running alongside of Nanny Marr Road. It was built in the late 1930s and officially opened by R. A. (Rab) Butler in the early war years. The aim of the school was to provide a good standard of secondary education for local children aged 11 to 16. Building Schools for the Future (BSF) was the name given to the British government's investment programme in secondary school buildings in England in the 2000s. The programme was ambitious in its costs, timescales and objectives, with politicians from all English political parties supportive of the principle but questioning the wisdom and cost effectiveness of the scheme. Bentley, South Yorkshire
Bentley is a suburb of Doncaster in South Yorkshire, England two miles north of the city of Doncaster. The population of the ward (also including Arksey, Shaftholme, Toll Bar and part of Scawthorpe) within the Metropolitan Borough of Doncaster at the 2011 Census was 14,191. The Bentley built-up area subdivision (including Arksey, Scawthorpe, Scawsby and Cusworth) had a population of 27,145.
