Netherlands At The 2018 Winter Paralympics
The Netherlands sent competitors to the 2018 Winter Paralympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea. Four people competed in para-snowboarding. Five people competed in para-alpine skiing. Anna Jochemsen and Jeffrey Stuut are standing skiers. Linda van Impelen, Jeroen Kampschreur and Niels de Langen have all competed in all 5 para-alpine sit-ski events. Lisa Bunschoten, Bibian Mentel and Chris Vos all competed at the 2014 Winter Paralympics in Sochi. Renske van Beek was the only snowboarder on Team Netherlands who did not go to Sochi. Team There were four people who competed in the Paralympics in para-snowboarding. There were another five people who competed in para-alpine skiing. Renske Van Beek
Renske van Beek (born 25 April 1989) is a Dutch para-snowboarder in the SB-LL2 category. Life and career Van Beek sustained a cerebral infarction when she was ten, which left her paralyzed on one side. She started snowboarding because skiing was no longer possible. Through Bibian Mentel's Mentelity Foundation, she ended up in the U23 team of the Dutch Ski Association. At the 2021 World Para Snow Sports Championships, van Beek won the bronze medal in the women's snowboard cross event. Along with Lisa Bunschoten, she also won the silver medal in the women's team event. The Snowboarding competition of the 2018 Winter Paralympics was held on 12 and 16 March 2018 at the Jeongseon Alpine Centre in Gangneung, South Korea. Classification Para-snowboarding is divided into three classification categories. ; SB-LL1 : Athletes competing in the class SB-LL1 have significant impairment to one leg, such as amputation above the knee, or "a significant combined impairment in two legs", affecting their balance, their board-control and their ability to navigate uneven terrain. Bibian Mentel-Spee
Bibian Mentel-Spee (27 September 1972 – 29 March 2021) was a Dutch three-fold Winter Paralympics gold-medalist, and five-times world champion para-snowboarding athlete. Mentel won the Paralympic gold medal in the snowboard cross discipline in the 2014 and 2018 Paralympic Winter Games, as well as in the banked slalom in 2018, despite battling cancer nine times since the beginning of the century. She won her 2018 medals at age 45. Mentel co-wrote two books about her life, career, and struggles with cancer, and set up her own "Mentelity" foundation. In 2012, Mentel was invested as a knight of the Order of Orange-Nassau. Career Mentel started her snowboard career in 1993. In 1996 she participated in her first FIS Snowboard World Cup competition. Mentel became six times Dutch champion in the regular, non-disabled half-pipe and snowboard cross disciplines, before developing medical troubles.
