Netherlands At The 2018 Winter Olympics
The Netherlands competed at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea, between 9 and 25 February 2018. Speed skater Jan Smeekens was appointed as flag bearer for the opening ceremony, which was attended by King Willem Alexander, Queen Máxima and Prime Minister Mark Rutte, who also observed the sporting events that featured Dutch competitors. The goal for the Dutch team was to win fifteen medals, as declared by Chef de mission Jeroen Bijl; they exceeded this goal by five medals, with a total of twenty, which placed the Netherlands fifth in the medal table. Most notably, the Dutch team dominated the individual speed skating events, winning seven of the ten gold medals awarded; they also won four medals in short track speed skating including their first ever gold medal in this discipline, won by Suzanne Schulting. Speed skating at the Winter Olympics, Speed skating at the 2018 Winter Olympics was held at the Gangneung Oval in Gangneung, South Korea between 10 and 24 February 2018. Qualification A total quota of 180 athletes were allowed to compete at the Games (maximum 100 men and 80 women). Countries were assigned quotas based on the results of the entire 2017–18 ISU Speed Skating World Cup in the autumn of 2017. Each nation was permitted to enter a maximum of three athletes per gender for all events apart from the 5000m, 10,000m and mass start events, for which they could enter a maximum of two athletes per event. Lotte Van Beek
Lotte van Beek (; born 9 December 1991) is a retired Dutch speed skater. She finished second on the women's 1500 metres event at the 2013 World Single Distance Championships. At the 2014 Winter Olympics, she was part of the Dutch team who won a gold medal on the women team pursuit; she also won a bronze medal on the women's 1500 metres. At the 2018 European Single Distance Speed Skating Championships, she won a gold medal on the women's 1500 metres and another with the Dutch women pursuit team. Marrit Leenstra (; born 10 May 1989) is a Dutch former Long track speed skating, long track speed skater. Skating career In the 2007 in speed skating, 2007 season she made her World Cup debut in Moscow. In the 2008 in speed skating, 2008 season she skated a junior world record in the 1500 meters at the 2007–08 ISU Speed Skating World Cup, World Cup in Salt Lake City. The women's 1500 metres speed skating competition of the 2018 Winter Olympics was held at the Gangneung Oval in Gangneung on 12 February 2018. Dutch skater Ireen Wüst, gold medalist at the previous Winter Olympics in this discipline, won the gold medal, Miho Takagi from Japan won the silver medal and Marrit Leenstra from the Netherlands won bronze, only 0.01 seconds ahead of her fellow countrywoman Lotte van Beek. On winning the gold medal Wüst became the first athlete to win gold medals at four consecutive Winter Olympics, exactly twelve years after her first Olympic medal in the 3000 metres in 2006, and with a total of ten medals, including five golds, Wüst takes the seventh position in the list of best Winter Olympic athlete ever. The men's 5000 metres speed skating competition of the 2018 Winter Olympics was held at Gangneung Oval in Gangneung on 11 February 2018. Summary The event was won by two-time defending champion Sven Kramer in an Olympic record time of 6:09:76. In doing so, he became the first man to win three gold medals in a speed skating event in three consecutive editions of the Olympics. Sven Kramer
Sven Kramer (; born 23 April 1986) is a retired Dutch long track speed skater who has won an all time record nine World Allround Championships as well as a record ten European Allround Championships. He is the Olympic champion of the 5000 meters at the Vancouver 2010, Sochi 2014 and Pyeongchang 2018 Olympics, and won a record 21 gold medals at the World Single Distance Championships; eight in the 5000 meters, five in the 10,000 meters, and eight in the team pursuit. Sjinkie Knegt (; born 5 July 1989) is a Dutch short track speed skater. Career He competed for the Netherlands at the 2010 Winter Olympics in the men's 500 m, 1000 m, and 1500m. At the January 2014 European Short Track Speed Skating Championships, he was disqualified from the 5000m relay final after making an obscene hand gesture at first-place finisher Victor Ahn of Russia. Carlijn Achtereekte
Carlijn Achtereekte (; born 29 January 1990) is a Dutch former speed skater who specialises in long distances. Achtereekte won three silver medals in the 5000 metres at the Dutch Single Distance Championships. At the 2015 World Single Distance Speed Skating Championships in Heerenveen, she won the silver medal at the 5000 metres event behind Martina Sáblíková. Currently Achtereekte is a professional cyclist, competing for Team Jumbo–Visma. The women's 3000 metres speed skating competition of the 2018 Winter Olympics was held at Gangneung Oval in Gangneung on 10 February 2018. Summary Competitors included reigning 2014 champion Ireen Wüst (also the 2006 gold medallist), 2010 champion Martina Sáblíková (also the 2014 silver medallist), and 2002 victor Claudia Pechstein. The 2014 bronze medallist Olga Graf qualified for the event but decided not to compete.
