Netherlands International Championships
The Dutch Open Tennis Amersfoort (or Dutch Open) originally known as the Netherlands International Championships and Netherland Championships was a tennis tournament played on outdoor clay court and held in three different locations in The Netherlands between 1898 and 2008. From 1957 to 1973 the tournament consisted of both men's and women's events (singles, doubles, mixed doubles) but from 1975 onward only men's singles and doubles events were held. History The inaugural edition began on 23 August 1898 in the Hague the first champion of the event was Irish player Joshua Pim awarded the title as a result of a walkover against American player William Howard until 1994 the tournament was played in multiple cities . It was part of the Grand Prix tennis circuit in the 1970s and an ATP Tour event from its inception in 1990. Grand Prix Tennis Circuit
The Grand Prix tennis circuit was a professional tennis tour for male players that existed from 1970 to 1989. The Grand Prix and World Championship Tennis (WCT) were the two predecessors to the current tour for male players, the ATP Tour, with the Grand Prix being more prominent. Background Before the Open Era, popular professional tennis players, such as Suzanne Lenglen and Vincent Richards, were contracted to professional promoters. Amateur players were under the jurisdiction of their national (and international) federations. Later professional promoters, such as Bill Tilden and Jack Kramer, often convinced leading amateurs like Pancho Gonzales and Rod Laver to join their tours with promises of good prize money. But these successes led to financial difficulties when players were paid too much and falling attendances resulted in reduced takings. In the early 1960s, the professional tour began to fall apart. Martin Mulligan
Martin "Marty" Mulligan (born 18 October 1940) is a former tennis player from Australia. He is best known for reaching the men's singles final at Wimbledon in 1962, where he was defeated by fellow Australian Rod Laver. Personal life Mulligan was born in the Sydney suburb of Marrickville. His maternal grandparents were Italian, from Orsago, Treviso, Veneto. They moved to Australia in 1900. Tennis career Juniors In 1958, he won the boys' singles title at the Australian Championships as well as the Boys' Doubles (with Bob Hewitt). Ramanathan Krishnan
Ramanathan Krishnan (born 11 April 1937) is a retired tennis player from India who was among the world's leading players in the 1950s and 1960s. He was twice a semifinalist at Wimbledon in 1960 and 1961, reaching as high as World No. 3 in Potter's amateur rankings. He led India to the Challenge Round of the 1966 Davis Cup against Australia and was the non playing captain when Vijay Amritraj and Anand Amritraj led India into the 1974 Davis Cup finals against South Africa. Mike Davies (tennis)
Michael Grenfell "Mike" Davies (9 January 1936 – 2 November 2015) was a Welsh professional tennis player, entrepreneur and administrator. He had a 60-year career in the tennis business, first as an amateur and professional tennis player, including a period as the number one ranked player in Great Britain and a member of the British Davis Cup team, then as an entrepreneur and one of the pioneers of the professional game. Playing career Davies was born in Swansea, Wales. He took up tennis at the age of 11, and was discovered by Fred Perry and Dan Maskell. He played on the British Davis Cup team with Bobby Wilson, Billy Knight and Roger Becker. Jacques Brichant
Jacques "Jacky" Brichant (28 March 1930 – 9 March 2011) was a Belgian tennis player. He was ranked world No. 9 for 1957. Brichant was a clay court specialist and won many clay court tournaments in Europe. Brichant has played the most Davis Cup ties for his country. Brichant reached the semi-finals of the French Championships in singles in 1958 which he lost to eventual champion Mervyn Rose. Additionally he reached the French quarter-finals three times (1956, 1957, 1959). He won the national Belgian title 10 times. Piet van Eijsden (9 May 1936 – 18 May 2021) was a Dutch tennis player. He was the runner-up in men's singles at the 1958 Dutch Open. Vladimir Petrović (tennis)
Vladimir Petrović (born 11 May 1929) is a Croatian former professional tennis player who represented Yugoslavia and later emigrated to the United States. Biography Petrović, a three-time national champion, played Davis Cup tennis for Yugoslavia. He also competed several times at both the French Championships and Wimbledon. Although he held a law degree from the University of Zagreb, he chose not to practise law as he would have been required to join the Communist Party. His most noted performance in a Grand Slam tournament was reaching the third round of the 1951 Wimbledon Championships. He won five set matches in both of the opening two rounds, then had his run ended by American Ham Richardson.
