Robert (Louis) Dressler (born 1927, died October 15, 2019, in Paraíso, Costa Rica) was an American botanist specialist of the taxonomy of the Orchidaceae. He graduated from the University of Southern California and Harvard University. ''Nervilia'', commonly known as shield orchids, is a genus of orchids with about 80 species widely distributed across most of sub-Saharan Africa, southern Asia (Saudi Arabia, India, China, Japan, Indochina, Indonesia, etc.), Australia, and various islands of the Pacific and Indian Oceans. Six species occur in Australia (2 or 3 of these endemic), with 16 in India, 10 in China and 5 in South Africa. Description Orchids in the genus ''Nervilia'' are terrestrial, perennial, deciduous, sympodial herbs with an oval to almost spherical tuber and sometimes a few short roots. Epidendroideae is a subfamily of plants in the orchid family, Orchidaceae. Epidendroideae is larger than all the other orchid subfamilies together, comprising more than 15,000 species in 576 genera. Most epidendroid orchids are tropical epiphytes, typically with pseudobulbs. There are, however, some terrestrials such as ''Epipactis'' and even a few myco-heterotrophs, which are parasitic upon mycorrhizal fungi.
