Neo Boys
Neo Boys was an American punk band from Portland, Oregon, United States, active from 1978-1983. Considered Portland's first all-female punk band, Neo Boys are noted for their political and feminist lyrics. Hannah Lew, of Grass Widow, wrote: "They created a world I have taken refuge in during times when I felt the effects of narrow attitudes about gender and women's voices in music." History Before Neo Boys was formed, Kim Kincaid, K.T. Kincaid and Jennifer LoBianco were part of Formica and the Bitches. The band only played a few shows before breaking up. Neo Boys band members included Kim Kincaid (vocals), K.T. Kincaid (bass), Jennifer LoBianco (guitar) and Pat Baum (drums). After Jennifer LoBianco left the Neoboys, Carol Steinel played guitar with the band from 1979 to 1980, followed by Meg Hentges who joined as a guitarist in 1980. Grass Widow
Grass Widow is an American indie rock band from San Francisco, California. Their music has been described as discordant and lo-fi, and connected to the post-punk roots of the members of the band. The band was formed in 2007 with members from the band Shitstorm. All three members share vocal duties. Hannah Lew plays bass, Raven Mahon plays guitar and Lillian Maring plays the drums. The band mentions in interviews their intentionally collaborative creative process, and their focus on sustainability in their music careers, opting to tour for only two weeks at a time to stay connected with friends and family. Songs are created together in their San Francisco practice space and all contribute equally to the work of the band. Wipers (band)
Wipers was a punk rock band formed in Portland, Oregon, in 1977 by guitarist and vocalist Greg Sage, along with drummer Sam Henry and bassist Dave Koupal. The group's tight song structure and use of heavy distortion were hailed as extremely influential by numerous critics and musicians. They are also considered to be the first Pacific Northwest punk band. History Origins Sage's intense interest in music began with cutting records at home as an adolescent. Inspired by Jimi Hendrix, Sage soon picked up the guitar, and in 1969, at age 17, he played on an eponymous album by professional wrestler Beauregarde. Foundation, early years Sage founded Wipers in Portland in 1977 along with drummer Henry and bassist Koupal, originally just as a recording project. Napalm Beach
Napalm Beach is an American rock band formed in Portland, Oregon. They are considered early innovators of the grunge sound. Nicholas Pell, writing for the ''Portland Mercury'' said "a huge influence on the grunge and alternative rock of the 1990s, Napalm Beach never had the name recognition of other Portland bands like Poison Idea or the Wipers." Napalm Beach shared the stage with bands such as X, Public Image Ltd., Joan Jett, Johnny Thunders, Gun Club, Bad Brains, Soundgarden, Screaming Trees, Mudhoney, Dead Moon, and Poison Idea. They also toured Germany five times between 1989 and 1992. During their long musical career they have released more than 30 studio and live recordings in various formats on a number of small independent labels in the U.S. and Germany. The Rats (American Band)
The Rats were an American garage punk band from Portland, Oregon, formed by Fred Cole previously of the garage rock band, The Lollipop Shoppe. Cole played guitar and sang, his wife, "Toody" played bass and sang, and initially Rod Rat played drums. Their sound was a raw mix of punk rock with occasional country touches. Their self-titled debut album appeared on Cole's Whizeagle label in 1980. Soon after, Rod Rat left the band, though he guested on the 1981 follow-up ''Intermittent Signals'' before his death by suicide. (Prior to his suicide Rod Rat (aka Rod Hibbert) also played drums in 1980-81 for Portland power pop band Domino Theory). Sam Henry, formerly of the Wipers, played drums on this LP but left to join another Portland band, Napalm Beach.
