Nelson R. Strong
Nelson "Nat" R. Strong (11 February 1862 – 26 February 1930) was an American politician. Strong was born on February 11, 1862 in Illnois and later arrived in Port Arthur, Texas in 1896 where he served as a founding developer, became its first postmaster, and the first mayor of Port Arthur, between 1898 and 1899. Personal life He married Cora Gray Strong in 1905, and the couple settled in her hometown of Slocum, Texas. Political career Strong was elected as Port Arthur's first mayor upon the town's incorporation in May 1898. Incidentally as recalled by early Port Arthur dignitaries, Strong was declared the winner by one vote in the final tabulation after an error that occurred when R.H. Woodworth, who later became the city's third mayor, accidentally dropped a cashier check instead of his ballot into the voting box. Strong resigned as mayor in September 1899. Port Arthur, Texas
Port Arthur is a city in Jefferson County within the Beaumont–Port Arthur metropolitan area of the U.S. state of Texas. A small, uninhabited portion extends into Orange County; it is east of Houston. The largest oil refinery in the United States, the Motiva Refinery, is located in Port Arthur. The population of Port Arthur was 53,818 at the 2010 census, down from 57,755 at the 2000 census. By 2020, its population rebounded to 56,039. Early attempts at settlements in the area had all failed. However, in 1895, Arthur Stilwell founded Port Arthur, and the town quickly grew. Port Arthur was incorporated as a city in 1898 and soon developed into a seaport. It eventually became the center of a large oil refinery network. Cora Gray Strong
Cora Gray Strong (4 September 1882 – 21 March 1959) was an American politician. Cora Gray was born in Elkhart, Texas, on 4 September 1882. Gray attended the Summer Hill Select School for Young Women, and became a teacher. She taught in Anderson County for one year, at Day, then moved to Bethel for another year-long teaching position. Gray then relocated to Dallas, to enroll at the Metropolitan Business College. After graduating, Gray was employed by the Dallas-based Briggs Machinery Supply Company. She married Nelson R. Strong in 1905, and moved with him to Slocum, Texas. In Slocum, Gray acquired and operated a store formerly owned by her father, and additionally served the city as an assistant postmaster for two decades. Palestine ( ) is a city in and the seat of Anderson County in the U.S. state of Texas. It was named for Palestine, Illinois, by preacher Daniel Parker, who had migrated from that town. Slocum, Texas
Slocum is an unincorporated community in southeast Anderson County, Texas, in the United States. According to the '' Handbook of Texas'', the community had a population of 198 in 2018. It is located within the Palestine, Texas micropolitan area. It is notable as the site of what is known as the Slocum Massacre, an unprovoked attack by a large mob of whites on what was then a majority-black community on July 29–30, 1910. Some twenty-two Blacks were documented as killed; other estimates are that up to ten times, that number may have been murdered. History The community's name is thought to have originated with E.T. McDaniel, the first shopkeeper and postmaster, who had long sought to get a post office for the community.
