Nelson Lawson
Nelson Simmons Lawson (1 May 1806 – 3 February 1849) was an Australian politician. He was born at sea on the '' Lady Nelson'', the son of William Lawson and Sarah Leadbeater. His first wife was Honoria Mary Dickinson whom he married on 7 January 1836 with whom he had six children. His second wife was Sarah Anne Kirke. In August 1848 he was elected one of two members for the County of Cumberland in the New South Wales Legislative Council, succeeding his father. Lawson died near Prospect in 1849, aged 42. HMS Lady Nelson (1798)
His Majestys Armed Survey Vessel ''Lady Nelson'' was commissioned in 1799 to survey the coast of Australia. At the time large parts of the Australian coast were unmapped and Britain had claimed only part of the continent. The British Government were concerned that, in the event of settlers of another European power becoming established in Australia, any future conflict in Europe would lead to a widening of the conflict into the southern hemisphere to the detriment of the trade that Britain sought to develop. It was against this background that ''Lady Nelson'' was chosen to survey and establish sovereignty over strategic parts of the continent. ''Lady Nelson'' left Portsmouth on 18 March 1800 and arrived at Sydney on 16 December 1800 after having been the first vessel to reach the east coast of Australia via Bass Strait. Prospect, New South Wales
Prospect is a suburb of Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia. Prospect is located 32 kilometres west of the Sydney central business district in the local government area of the City of Blacktown and is part of the Greater Western Sydney region. One of the oldest suburbs in Sydney, Prospect takes its name from the prominent nearby landmark of Prospect Hill - from the top of which people could ''get a prospect of'' (see a great distance) the surrounding countryside. Electoral District Of County Of Cumberland
The Electoral district of County of Cumberland was an electorate of the New South Wales Legislative Council at a time when some of its members were elected and the balance were appointed by the Governor. It was created by the 1843 Electoral Districts Act and returned two members. In 1856 the unicameral Legislative Council was abolished and replaced with an elected Legislative Assembly and an appointed Legislative Council. The district was represented by the Legislative Assembly electorates of Cumberland (South Riding) and Cumberland (North Riding). New South Wales Legislative Council
The New South Wales Legislative Council, often referred to as the upper house, is one of the two chambers of the parliament of the Australian state of New South Wales. The other is the Legislative Assembly. Both sit at Parliament House in the state capital, Sydney. It is normal for legislation to be first deliberated on and passed by the Legislative Assembly before being considered by the Legislative Council, which acts in the main as a house of review. The Legislative Council has 42 members, elected by proportional representation in which the whole state is a single electorate. Members serve eight-year terms, which are staggered, with half the Council being elected every four years, roughly coinciding with elections to the Legislative Assembly. Charles Cowper
Sir Charles Cowper (), (26 April 1807 – 19 October 1875) was an Australian politician and the Premier of New South Wales on five occasions from 1856 to 1870. Cowper did useful work but does not rank among the more distinguished Australian politicians. Cowper's governments had a fairly coherent Liberal tendency, a trend which continued with the governments of Henry Parkes and later developed into the Free Trade Party. In 1852, Parkes referred in public to his "mild, affable and benignant character". In later years he spoke of his "quick insight in dealing with surrounding circumstances, and much good humour and tact in dealing with individuals". His political adroitness was such that it secured for him the popular sobriquet of "Slippery Charley". Probably Cowper deserved this title no more than Bishop Wilberforce deserved his of "Soapy Sam", but Rusden speaks of Cowper as "ever anxious to link himself with a majority" and frequently shows animus when speaking of him. William Lawson (explorer)
William Lawson, (2 June 1774 – 16 June 1850) was a British soldier, explorer, land owner, grazier and politician who migrated to Sydney, New South Wales in 1800. Along with Gregory Blaxland and William Wentworth, he pioneered the 1813 crossing of the Blue Mountains, first successful crossing of the Blue Mountains, New South Wales, Blue Mountains by British colonists. Early life Lawson was born in Finchley, Middlesex, England to John Lawson and his second wife Hannah Summers. His father owned a successful chandler (occupation), chandler business and was a descendant of the aristocratic Richard Lawson of High Riggs, Scottish Lawson family of Cairnmuir House in the Pentland Hills. Lawson was educated in London and trained as a surveyor. He decided to join the British Army and purchased a commission in the New South Wales Corps as an ensign (rank), ensign for £300 in 1799. Robert Fitzgerald (pastoralist)
Robert Fitzgerald (1 June 1807 – 9 May 1865) was an Australian politician. He was born at Windsor to settler Richard Fitzgerald and Mary Ford. He inherited livestock in 1828 and was granted land at Rylstone in 1830. He later acquired further land on the Liverpool Plains in 1832 and at Yarraman in 1835 before inheriting his father's large estate in 1840. In addition he owned tracts of land in Bligh County and around the Gwydir River, as well as significant real estate in Sydney. In 1840 he was director of the Bank of New South Wales. On 11 March 1841 he married Elizabeth Henrietta Rouse, with whom he had six children and they resided at ''Mamre''; a second marriage to Charlotte Bennett on 8 October 1864 was childless. He served on Windsor District Council, and was an elected member of the New South Wales Legislative Council from 1849 to 1856.
