Nelson is an unincorporated area, unincorporated historic locale in Baker County, Oregon, Baker County, Oregon, United States. It is about southeast of Durkee, Oregon, Durkee on U.S. Route 30 in Oregon, U.S. Route 30/Interstate 84 in Oregon, Interstate 84. Nelson is northwest of Lime, Oregon, Lime on the Burnt River (Oregon), Burnt River and was the source of the limestone deposits used by the cement plant at Lime when the local deposits were depleted. A cement plant built in Nelson in 1979 replaced the one at Lime, which closed in 1980. The cement plant at Nelson closed temporarily in 2009, but as of 2014 it was operating again. The Ash Grove Cement Company refers to the plant as their Durkee plant. Nelson is located on the Union Pacific Railroad mainline's Huntington Subdivision. Lime, Oregon
Lime is an unincorporated community and ghost town in Baker County, Oregon, United States, north of Huntington on U.S. Route 30/ Interstate 84. It is near the confluence of Marble Creek and the Burnt River on the Union Pacific Railroad. The Oregon Trail passes through Lime. History The Lime post office was established in 1899. The deposits of limestone in the area were manufactured into lime that supplied a large area of Eastern Oregon and western Idaho. The Acme Cement Plaster Company built a plant at Lime in 1916 to produce plaster. The Sun Portland Cement Company bought the plant in 1921 and built another facility for producing Portland cement. Durkee, Oregon
Durkee is an unincorporated community in Baker County, Oregon, United States. It has a post office with the ZIP code of 97905. Durkee lies at the Vandercar Road exit of Interstate 84. Durkee is known as the site of Oregon's only cement plant, the Ash Grove Cement Company plant in nearby Nelson. It one of Baker County's largest private employers. Durkee was originally a stage stop called Express, and by the 1860s it was the only transfer point between Umatilla, Oregon, and Boise, Idaho. It prospered as a water stop and telegraph station for the railroad, and later as a stop on Highway 30, the only paved road in the area.
