Neither The Sea Nor The Sand
''Neither the Sea Nor the Sand'' (also known as ''The Exorcism of Hugh'') is a 1972 British horror film, based on the book of the same name, by Gordon Honeycombe. The film is directed by Fred Burnley, and stars Susan Hampshire, Frank Finlay, Michael Petrovitch and Michael Craze. Plot Anna Robinson, having recently left her husband, has retreated to Jersey, where she attempts to sort out her complicated life. One day while out walking, she encounters a man named Hugh Debernon, with whom she begins a relationship, much to the disapproval of Hugh's religious brother, George. On a holiday to Scotland, Anna begins to question the relationship, worried that it may just be an affair, for which Hugh reassures her that it is not the case and declares his love. While Hugh is chasing Anna on a beach, he suddenly collapses and is pronounced dead by the local doctor. A distraught Anna cannot accept that he is gone. Fred Burnley
Fred Burnley (1933–1975) was a British television and film director. Life Burnley was educated at The Queen's College, Oxford, where he gained a first-class degree in Philosophy, Politics and Economics. He joined Ealing Studios as an assistant on '' The Ladykillers'' in 1955, but left after six months to edit TV commercials and documentaries. In 1965 he joined the BBC as director-producer. He directed eight of the '' Whicker's World'' series before joining the arts programme '' Omnibus''. His debut for ''Omnibus'' was ''The Dream Divided'', on F. Scott Fitzgerald, which was followed by a film biography of Amedeo Modigliani. In 1972 he directed the film ''Neither the Sea Nor the Sand''. Pre-certification Video
A pre-certification video is any videotape or laserdisc issued in the UK before the introduction of the 1984 Video Recordings Act. Pre-certification videos were not required by law to be submitted to the BBFC so the era was unregulated, leading to many uncut releases of videos which would have fallen foul of the BBFC's strict guidelines, and would therefore have been censored if submission to the board was a legal requirement. However, whilst many of the larger respectable companies simply issued their previously BBFC certificated cinema releases onto video to play safe as they feared there was bound to be a clampdown at some stage, some of the smaller independent companies decided to take advantage of the unregulated video rentals market by issuing "strong uncut" versions depicting graphic violence and gore. Guild Home Video (GHV) or Guild Film Distribution was one of the first video distribution companies to start operating in the UK.
