Neil Ross McKinnon
Neil Ross McKinnon King's Counsel, KC ( – 26 April 1909) was a British barrister resident in British Guiana (now Guyana). He was the president of the Board of Superintendence of New Amsterdam, Guyana, New Amsterdam, and later the first mayor of that town. A stamp collector, he once owned the British Guiana 1c magenta, British Guiana 1856 1c magenta stamp, the only known copy of that stamp, which he bought from a local schoolboy for six shillings and sold five years later in England. The stamp sold in 2014 for US$9,480,000. Early life and family Neil McKinnon was born in the mid-nineteenth century of Scottish descent. He qualified as a barrister of London's Middle Temple around 1885 and married Eugenie Bath Tait in London in 1887. They had three children, the third of which, Eileen Alice Kate, died of typhoid in 1906 at the age of 13. Career McKinnon practised in British Guiana. British Guiana 1c Magenta
The British Guiana 1c magenta is regarded by many philatelists as the world's most famous rare stamp. It was issued in limited numbers in British Guiana (now Guyana) in 1856, and only one specimen is now known to exist. It is the only major postage stamp ever issued that is not represented in Britain's Royal Philatelic Collection. It is imperforate, printed in black on magenta paper, and it features a sailing ship along with the colony's Latin motto ''"Damus Petimus Que Vicissim"'' (We give and expect in return) in the middle. Four thin lines frame the ship. The stamp's country of issue and value in small black upper case lettering in turn surround the frame. With its US$9,480,000 sale on 17 June 2014 to Stuart Weitzman, this item broke the world record for a single stamp auction price each of the last four times it has been sold.
