Nee Soon South Single Member Constituency was a single member constituency (SMC) consisting of Yishun's Neighbourhood 8 (Khatib), part of Neighbourhood 7, near Springleaf MRT station, houses and condominiums along Kebun Baru and private residential areas along Sembawang Road (near Sembawang Army Camp). It was formed in 1988 after Nee Soon Constituency was split up into several SMCs. It was merged into Ang Mo Kio Group Representation Constituency (GRC) in 1997. The GRC includes most of Yishun town, the private residential areas along Sembawang Road and Upper Thomson Road, the southern part of Sembawang and the Nee Soon Camp. The GRC consists of five divisions: Chong Pang, Nee Soon Central, Nee Soon East, Nee Soon South and Nee Soon Link. People's Action Party
The People's Action Party (abbreviation: PAP) is a major conservative centre-right political party in Singapore and is one of the three contemporary political parties represented in Parliament, alongside the opposition Workers' Party (WP) and Progress Singapore Party (PSP). Initially founded as a traditional centre-left party in 1954, the leftist faction was soon expelled from the party in 1961 by Lee Kuan Yew in the midst of Singapore's merger with Malaysia, desiring to move the party's ideology towards the centre after its first electoral victory in 1959. Nee Soon East SMC
Nee Soon East Single Member Constituency was a single member constituency in the northern area of Singapore. The ward consists of Yishun's Neighbourhoods 2, 3 and 4. Formed in 2001 after being carved out from Sembawang Group Representation Constituency, its Member of Parliament was People's Action Party's Ho Peng Kee. In 2011, it was merged into a newly formed Nee Soon GRC. This SMC and Nee Soon Central SMC were formerly under the Sembawang-Nee Soon Town Council, which comprises Sembawang GRC (which has six members with this SMC) and Nee Soon Central SMC from 2001 until 2011. Nee Soon Central Single Member Constituency was a single member constituency (SMC) in the northern area of Singapore. The seat consists of Yishun Town Centre (Neighbourhood 9), Neighbourhood 6 and part of Neighbourhood 7. The constituency was formed in 1988 and has been held by the ruling party from 1988 to 1991 when the People's Action Party lost the seat to Singapore Democratic Party's Cheo Chai Chen but Cheo lost to Ong in 1997 Singapore general election. Nee Soon Constituency was a single member constituency in the northern area in Singapore that was created in 1959 general elections and ceased to exist prior to 1988 general elections. History Nee Soon was one of the rural areas in the north of Singapore. At its inception in 1959, there were only 8,694 voters even including present-day Ang Mo Kio town, whereas wards nearer to the city centre such as Kreta Ayer had 14,173 voters in a much smaller area. This ward was finally dissolved prior to the 1988 general elections, with most of the ward forming Nee Soon South SMC consisting of Khatib and Yio Chu Kang (near Yio Chu Kang MRT station), and the portion in Yishun Central being renamed Nee Soon Central SMC where former opposition MP Cheo Chai Chen made his debut there. The remainder of this constituency was carved into 2 sub-divisions of Chong Pang and Nee Soon East. 1988 Singaporean General Election
General elections were held in Singapore on 3 September 1988. President of Singapore, President Wee Kim Wee dissolved parliament on 17 August 1988 on the advice of Prime Minister of Singapore, Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew. The result was a victory for the People's Action Party, which won 80 of the 81 seats. Though the total eligible voter population surpassed 1 million in 1976 Singaporean general election, 1976, this was the first time that the total eligible voter population in contested seats and voter turnout exceeded 1 million. General elections were held in Singapore on 31 August 1991. President Wee Kim Wee dissolved parliament on 14 August 1991 on the advice of Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong. The result was a victory for the People's Action Party, which won 77 of the 81 seats while Worker's Party won Hougang SMC and the Singapore Democratic Party retain Potong Pasir SMC and captured Nee Soon Central SMC and Bukit Gombak SMC making it the largest representation for opposition-elect in Parliament and was marked as a second and third SMC won by the Singapore Democratic Party and the first time an opposition claimed multiple SMCs. Ang Mo Kio Group Representation Constituency
The Ang Mo Kio Group Representation Constituency is a five-member Group Representation Constituency (GRC) in the north eastern region of Singapore. The constituency encompasses the majority of Ang Mo Kio (Teck Ghee, Cheng San-Seletar, portions of Yio Chu Kang), Seletar Hills, the northern half of Serangoon North, a portion of northern Hougang and a portion of Fernvale. The western portion consists of parts of the Central Catchment Nature Reserve, while in the northeastern corner, it borders the Straits of Johor with two reclaimed islands, Pulau Punggol Barat and Pulau Punggol Timor.
