Nedonas
The Nedonas ( el, Νέδωνας, katharevousa: Νέδων ''Nedon'') is a river Messenia, Peloponnese, Greece. It is long, and its drainage area is . Geography The river rises on the western slope of the Taygetus mountains, at around 1,100 m elevation, near the village Artemisia. It flows in southwestern direction, through a steep and narrow gorge. It is fed by several small tributaries, including the Nedousa. It flows through the city centre of Kalamata, where it empties into the Messenian Gulf. The Greek National Road 82 (Pylos - Kalamata - Sparta) runs along the river for a part of its length. Kalamata
Kalamáta ( el, Καλαμάτα ) is the second most populous city of the Peloponnese peninsula, after Patras, in southern Greece and the largest city of the homonymous administrative region. As the capital and chief port of the Messenia regional unit, it lies along the Nedon River at the head of the Messenian Gulf. The 2011 census recorded 69,849 inhabitants for the wider Kalamata Municipality, of which, 62,409 resided in the municipal unit of Kalamata, and 54,567 in the city proper. Kalamata is renowned as the land of the Kalamatianos dance and Kalamata olives. Name The modern name ''Kalamáta'' is a corruption of the older name Καλάμαι, ''Kalámai'', " reeds". Taygetus
The Taygetus, Taugetus, Taygetos or Taÿgetus ( el, Ταΰγετος, Taygetos) is a mountain range on the Peloponnese peninsula in Southern Greece. The highest mountain of the range is Mount Taygetus, also known as "Profitis Ilias", or "Prophet Elias" (Elijah). The name is one of the oldest recorded in Europe, appearing in the Odyssey. In classical mythology, it was associated to the nymph Taygete and it was named after her. During Byzantine times and up until the 19th century, the mountain was also known as Pentadaktylos (Πενταδάκτυλος; Greek for ''five-fingered'', a common name during that period). Messenian Gulf
The Messenian Gulf (, ''Messiniakós Kólpos'') is a sea that is part of the Ionian Sea. The gulf is circumscribed by the southern coasts of Messenia and the southwestern coast of the Mani peninsula in Laconia. Its bounds are Venetiko Island to the west and Cape Tainaron to the southeast. The western shores are mostly low-lying, fertile and well-developed, while the eastern shore is dominated by the southern foothills of the Taygetos and comparatively rocky and inaccessible, with few settlements. Katharevousa
Katharevousa ( el, Καθαρεύουσα, , literally "purifying anguage) is a conservative form of the Modern Greek language conceived in the late 18th century as both a literary language and a compromise between Ancient Greek and the contemporary vernacular, Demotic Greek. Originally, it was widely used for both literary and official purposes, though sparingly in daily language. In the 20th century, it was increasingly adopted for official and formal purposes, until minister of education Georgios Rallis made Demotic Greek the official language of Greece in 1976, and in 1982 Prime Minister Andreas Papandreou abolished the polytonic system of writing for both Demotic and Katharevousa. Artemisia ( el, Αρτεμισία, before 1927: Τσερνίτσα - ''Tsernitsa'') is a mountain village in the municipality of Kalamata, Messenia, Greece. , it had a population of 136 for the village and 142 for the municipal district, which includes the small village Agios Ioannis Theologos. It is situated at 860 m above sea level. Many of its residents live there only during the summer months. It is located in the west part of the Taygetos mountains on the GR-82 (Pylos - Kalamata - Sparta) between Kalamata and Sparta. It is 1.5 km southwest of Alagonia and 13 km northeast of Kalamata.
