Nea Santa
Nea Santa ( el, Νέα Σάντα, old name Volovot until 1926), is a small town in Kilkis regional unit, in the Central Macedonia region of Greece. It has a population of 1,693 (2011 census). The community Nea Santa (pop. 2,144 in 2011) consists of the villages Nea Santa and Panteleimon. Nea Santa is south of the city of Kilkis in the Kilkis municipality. Central Macedonia
Central Macedonia ( el, Κεντρική Μακεδονία, Kentrikí Makedonía, ) is one of the thirteen administrative regions of Greece, consisting of the central part of the geographical and historical region of Macedonia. Kilkis ( el, Περιφερειακή ενότητα Κιλκίς) is one of the regional units of Greece, in the geographic region of Macedonia. It is part of the region of Central Macedonia. Its capital is the city of Kilkis. Geography The geography of the regional unit of Kilkis is characterized by the wide and flat Axios river valley in the westcentral part, and mountain ranges on its western and northeastern edges. Kilkis
Kilkis ( el, Κιλκίς) is a city in Central Macedonia, Greece. As of 2011 there were 22,914 people living in the city proper, 28,745 people living in the municipal unit, and 51,926 in the municipality of Kilkis. It is also the capital city of the regional unit of Kilkis (regional unit), Kilkis. The area of Kilkis, during the 20th century, became several times a war theatre; during the Macedonian Struggle, the Balkan Wars, WWI, WWII, the Greek Resistance and the Greek civil war. Gallikos
Gallikos ( el, Γαλλικός) is a village and a former municipality in the Kilkis regional unit, Greece. Since the 2011 local government reform it is part of the municipality Kilkis, of which it is a municipal unit. The municipal unit has an area of 149.054 km2. Population 6,343 (2011). The seat of the municipality was in the village of Kampanis. The municipality Gallikos was created after 13 small villages in the area south of the city of Kilkis merged in the late 1990s when the Greek government implemented its Kapodistrias project to fuse - and thus limit the number of - local authorities in the country. Greek Refugees
Greek refugees is a collective term used to refer to the more than one million Greek Orthodox natives of Asia Minor, Thrace and the Black Sea areas who fled during the Greek genocide (1914-1923) and Greece's later defeat in the Greco-Turkish War (1919–1922), as well as remaining Greek Orthodox inhabitants of Turkey who were required to leave their homes for Greece shortly thereafter as part of the population exchange between Greece and Turkey, which formalized the population transfer and barred the return of the refugees. Pontus or Pontos (; el, Πόντος, translit=Póntos, "Sea") is a region on the southern coast of the Black Sea, located in the modern-day eastern Black Sea Region of Turkey. Dumanlı ( pnt, Σάντα, Sanda or Santa) was formerly a mid-sized community in Gümüşhane Province, Turkey, close to its border with Trabzon Province. History Established in the 17th century by Greeks who fled the coast of Pontus in order to escape the oppression of the Derebeys. It was an important caravan and mining village, with 13 neighborhoods and more than 5,000 citizens. Before 1856, the inhabitants of Dumanlı were recorded as Christian (51%) and Crypto-Christian (49%). After 1856, with the Ottoman Reform Edict of 1856 that equalized all citizens regardless of religion (removing the "first citizen" status of the Muslims), they changed their status to Christian instead of Crypto-Christians, as pretending to be Muslim was no longer necessary to receive equal rights. 71st Airmobile Brigade (Greece)
The 71st Airmobile Brigade "Pontus" ( el, 71η Αερομεταφερόμενη Ταξιαρχία «Πόντος», 71 A/M ΤΑΞ) is an airmobile infantry brigade of the Hellenic Army. The brigade was established after the reorganization of the 71st Infantry Brigade to an air assault formation. Members of the Brigade wear the red beret. It is a part of the NATO Response Force (NRF) and of the HELBROC BG. History The 71st Infantry Regiment was established in Drama on 28 October 1940 and took part in World War II along the borders of Bulgaria. During the German invasion in 1941 the regiment was based in the sector of Paranesti, where it won numerous engagements against German forces. When the Axis occupied the country, the Regiment was dissolved. It was reformed on 24 April 1945, after Greece was liberated.
