Navan ( ; , meaning "the Cave") is the county town of County Meath, Republic of Ireland, Ireland. In 2016, it had a population of 30,173, making it the List of urban areas in the Republic of Ireland by population, tenth largest settlement in Republic of Ireland, Ireland. It is at the confluence of the River Boyne and Leinster Blackwater, Blackwater, around 50 km northwest of Dublin. History and name Navan is a Norman foundation: Hugh de Lacy, Lord of Meath, Hugh de Lacy, who was granted the Lordship of Meath in 1172, awarded the Baron of Navan, Barony of Navan to one of his knights, Jocelyn de Angulo, who built a fort there, from which the town developed. County Meath
County Meath (; gle, Contae na Mí or simply ) is a county in the Eastern and Midland Region of Ireland, within the province of Leinster. It is bordered by Dublin to the southeast, Louth to the northeast, Kildare to the south, Offaly to the southwest, Westmeath to the west, Cavan to the northwest, and Monaghan to the north. To the east, Meath also borders the Irish Sea along a narrow strip between the rivers Boyne and Delvin, giving it the second shortest coastline of any county. Baron Of Navan

It was a customary title: in other words, the holder of the title was always referred to as a Baron, and this privilege was hereditary, but the Baron was not a peer in the strict sense, and was not entitled to a seat in the Irish House of Lords. The title was conferred by Hugh de Lacy, Lord of Meath, on his trusted lieutenant Jocelyn de Angulo, in or about the year 1172. Jocelyn is thought to have taken his surname from his birthplace at Angle, Pembrokeshire. Junior branches of the Nangle dynasty founded the Nagle and Costello families. Jocelyn De Angulo
Jocelyn de Angulo, 1st Baron of Navan (''fl.'' 1172), was an Anglo-Norman knight. Biography De Angulo was one of fifty knights serving under Hugh de Lacy upon the latter's grant of the Lordship of Meath by King Henry II of England in 1172. Jocelyn was awarded the title Baron of Navan by de Lacy. He had sons Gilbert, Philip and William, all of whom would be outlawed for rebellion in 1195. He built a fort at Navan, the origin of the town, of which he can be called the founder. Jocelyn is believed to have derived his surname from his homeplace of Angle, Pembrokeshire. Philip de Angulo Philip was an Anglo-Irish knight, fl. 1195–1206, son of Jocelyn de Angulo of Meath, Philip and his two brothers, Gilbert and William, were outlawed for rebellion in 1195 and had their lands confiscated. The River Boyne ( ga, An Bhóinn or ''Abhainn na Bóinne'') is a river in Leinster, Ireland, the course of which is about long. It rises at Trinity Well, Newberry Hall, near Carbury, County Kildare, and flows towards the Northeast through County Meath to reach the Irish Sea between Mornington, County Meath, and Baltray, County Louth. The Kells Blackwater ( ga, An Abhainn Dubh), also called the River Blackwater or Leinster Blackwater, is a river that flows through the counties of Cavan and Meath in Ireland. It is a tributary of the River Boyne which flows into the Irish Sea at Drogheda.
