Naval Station New York
Naval Station New York was a United States Navy Naval Station on Staten Island in New York City, closed in 1994. Opened in 1990, it was part of the Reagan administration's Strategic Homeport program. The station had two sections: a Strategic Homeport in Stapleton where ships docked, and a larger section occupying Fort Wadsworth, where administrative offices and bachelor and family housing were located. Comprising about with some of office space, the naval station was also home to NAVRESSO, the Navy Resale and Services Support Office, commanded by Admiral Squibb. NAVRESSO later moved to Norfolk, Virginia. A pier was built to accommodate the warships of a surface action group. The pier was later named for the Sullivan brothers. Staten Island
Staten Island ( ) is a borough of New York City, coextensive with Richmond County, in the U.S. state of New York. Located in the city's southwest portion, the borough is separated from New Jersey by the Arthur Kill and the Kill Van Kull and from the rest of New York by New York Bay. With a population of 495,747 in the 2020 Census, Staten Island is the least populated borough but the third largest in land area at . A home to the Lenape indigenous people, the island was settled by Dutch colonists in the 17th century. It was one of the 12 original counties of New York state. A cruiser is a type of warship. Modern cruisers are generally the largest ships in a fleet after aircraft carriers and amphibious assault ships, and can usually perform several roles. The term "cruiser", which has been in use for several hundred years, has changed its meaning over time.
