Naval Computer And Telecommunications Station Naples, Italy
The Naval Computer and Telecommunications Station Naples (NCTS Naples) provides voice, video and data services to the U.S. Navy joint, allied and coalition customers. It has two manned sites: C4I at Capodichino and SATCOM at Lago Patria. NCTS Naples has approximately 20 Officers, 325 Enlisted personnel, and 40 civilians. NCTS Naples History 1963 to 1968 In 1963, Naval Communication Unit was established on the Joint Force Command Naples (AFSOUTH) post in Bagnoli. Most of the unit's resources came from the communications department of Naval Support Activity, Naples. In May 1968, its mission was expanded to include fleet support for units in the Mediterranean Sea and the command was renamed Naval Communications Station, Italy (NAVCOMMSTA). 1974 to 1976 In July 1974, the continuing expansion was marked by the installation of the Naval Communication Processing and Routing System (NAVCOMPARS) and sophisticated satellite systems. Allied Joint Force Command Naples (JFC Naples) is a NATO military command based in Lago Patria, in the Metropolitan City of Naples, Italy. It was activated on 15 March 2004, after effectively redesigning its predecessor command, Allied Forces Southern Europe (AFSOUTH), originally formed in 1951. Bagnoli is a western seaside quarter of Naples, Italy, well beyond the confines of the original city. It is beyond Cape Posillipo and, thus, looking on the coast of the Bay of Pozzuoli. Industrialization and World War II Bagnoli was one of the sites of Naples' industrialization in the early 20th century, with the construction of a steel mill. During World War II Bagnoli was damaged as a result of the bombings of Naples. After World War II, Bagnoli was overbuilt by virtually uncontrolled construction and then suffered urban decay. The Sixth Fleet is a numbered fleet of the United States Navy operating as part of United States Naval Forces Europe. The Sixth Fleet is headquartered at Naval Support Activity Naples, Italy.
