Natural Lands
Natural Lands is a non-profit land conservation organization with headquarters in Media, Pennsylvania, dedicated to the management, protection, and conservation of eastern Pennsylvania and southern New Jersey's native forests, fields, streams, and wetlands. The organization owns and manages 44 nature preserves—totaling more than 23,000 acres—located in 13 counties in Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Nineteen of the preserves are open to the public for recreational use; the others have limited visitation due to the presence of sensitive ecosystems or limited facilities. Background In addition to owning and managing preserves, Natural Lands preserves land by working with private land owners to establish and enforce conservation easements. Media, Pennsylvania
Media is a borough in and the county seat of Delaware County, Pennsylvania. It is located about west of Philadelphia, the sixth most populous city in the nation with 1.6 million residents as 2020. It is part of the Delaware Valley metropolitan statistical area. Media was incorporated in 1850 at the same time that it was named the county seat. The Glades (New Jersey)
Glades Wildlife Refuge, also known as The Glades, is in Newport, New Jersey along the Delaware Bay. Owned by Natural Lands, this nature preserve is a landscape of tidal marshes, wooded uplands, beaches along the Delaware Bay, and an old growth forest. Glades Wildlife Refuge open from dawn till dusk daily and is publicly accessible at several points. Several of these points are part of New Jersey's Coastal Heritage Route. In the 1970's Glades Wildlife Refuge was the site of the last remaining nesting Bald Eagles in New Jersey. This location played a key role in the reintroduction of the Bald Eagle to the region. Beaversprite
Beaversprite is a nature reserve in Fulton County, New York, with parts in St. Johnsville, New York, St. Johnsville, Oppenheim, New York, Oppenheim, and Dolgeville, New York, Dolgeville. It was founded by Dorothy Richards, known as the "Beaver Woman" or "Beaver Lady", and her husband. She tamed beavers in the sanctuary and kept some inside their cottage in the reserve. The Richards made their home open to visitors, where they could have close contact with the creatures. History Dorothy Burney Richards (April 7, 1894 – August 1, 1985) was born and raised in Little Falls, New York, as was her husband Allison ("Al", April 16, 1892 – July 21, 1963).
