National Parks Of The Netherlands
National parks in the Netherlands were defined in the 1960s as areas of at least 10 km² consisting of natural terrains, water and/or forests, with a special landscape and flora and fauna. The first two national parks were founded in the 1930s by private organisations. The first official national park, Schiermonnikoog National Park, was not established until 1989. The most recent national park to have been established is the Nieuw Land National Park, which was established in 2018. In 2011, the government decided to make the provinces responsible for the national parks. As of 2021, there are 21 national parks. Veluwezoom National Park
Veluwezoom National Park is a national park of the Netherlands located in the province of Gelderland. This park is the oldest national park of the Netherlands. It has a surface area of 50 square kilometers at the southeastern edge of the Veluwe, a complex of terminal push moraines from the Saalian glaciation. De Hoge Veluwe National Park
De Hoge Veluwe National Park (, "The High Veluwe") is a Dutch national park in the province of Gelderland near the cities of Ede, Wageningen, Arnhem and Apeldoorn. It is approximately in area, consisting of heathlands, sand dunes, and woodlands. It is situated in the Veluwe, the area of the largest terminal moraine in the Netherlands. Most of the landscape of the park and the Veluwe was created during the last ice age. The alternating sand dune areas and heathlands may have been caused by human utilization of the surrounding lands. The park forms one of the largest continuous nature reserves in the Netherlands. Drentsche Aa National Park
National Park Drentsche Aa is a national park of the Netherlands located in the province of Drenthe on the west side of the Hondsrug. It consists of the cultural landscape surrounding the valley of the small river the Drentsche Aa. The landscape is currently nearly the same as it was in the mid 19th century, as the several agricultural landscape reforms of the 20th century were not implemented in this area. Drents-Friese Wold National Park
The Drents-Friese Wold National Park is a national park in the Dutch provinces of Friesland and Drenthe, covering more than , founded in 2000. It consists of forests, heath lands and drift-sands. Landscape and history It is sure that people lived in this area already in the Stone Age. In the landscape several graves from that time are visible. The present characteristics of the area are strongly influenced by the 'esdorp culture'. Farmers used the lands for grazing by their sheep. The continuous removal of minerals resulted in heathlands and sand-drifts. In the 19th century, the state started forestry programmes and species such as oak, pine, Douglas fir and Japanese larch were planted. These trees still cover a large part of the area. De Alde Feanen National Park
De Alde Feanen National Park (official, combination of Dutch Language, Dutch and West Frisian language, Frisian: ''Nationaal Park De Alde Feanen'') is a national park in the Netherlands province of Friesland. The Alde Feanen is also a Natura 2000 area. The Alde Feanen is part of the municipalities Leeuwarden, Smallingerland and Tytsjerksteradiel. Its size is about . Part of the national park is the lake area ''Princenhof'' (or Princehof). The Alde Feanen contains morasses, lakes, forests, peat and meadows. In the area at least 450 plant species and 100 bird species can be found. A very prominent bird is the white stork (''Ciconia ciconia''). Tall wooden poles have been installed so that the storks can build nests. Another attraction is provided by Shetland pony, Shetland ponies. Schiermonnikoog National Park
Schiermonnikoog National Park is a national park in the Dutch province of Friesland. It was founded in 1989. It covers about , the majority of the island Schiermonnikoog. Landscape and history The island arose during the last glacial period and its shape has been very variable since then. Dominant processes are sand drifting, erosion and sedimentation along the coasts, characteristic for a tidal landscape. In former times, only few people lived on the island, most fishermen. Around 1900, the state started forestry programs to prevent sand drifting. In addition, dikes were built to protect the island and its population. Some of the marshes were embanked in the course of time and transformed to polders for agriculture. De Biesbosch National Park is one of the largest national parks of the Netherlands and one of the last extensive areas of freshwater tidal wetlands in Northwestern Europe. The Biesbosch ('forest of sedges' or 'rushwoods') consists of a large network of rivers and smaller and larger creeks with islands. Oosterschelde National Park is a national park in the Dutch province of Zeeland. This national park was established on 8 May 2002. It comprises the Eastern Scheldt (Dutch: ''Oosterschelde''), Keeten-Mastgat, Krabbenkreek, Zijpe, Slaak, and Krammer. The Eastern Scheldt part behind the Oesterdam doesn't belong to the national park.
