National War Dog Cemetery
The National War Dog Cemetery is a memorial to war dogs located at Naval Base Guam. The cemetery honors the dogs—mostly Doberman Pinschers—that were killed in service with the United States Marine Corps during the Battle of Guam (1944), Second Battle of Guam in 1944. History The island of Guam, an American territory since 1898, was Battle of Guam (1941), captured by Japanese forces on December 10, 1941, in the first days of the U.S. entry into World War II. Guam was Japanese occupation of Guam, held by the Japanese for two and a half years, until U.S. Marines landed to Battle of Guam (1941), retake the island in July 1944. Along with them were the 2nd and 3rd War Dog Platoons, used as sentries and scouts in over 450 patrols. The Military Working Dog Teams National Monument is a monument to military working dogs located at Joint Base San Antonio (JBSA)- Lackland in San Antonio, Texas. The monument represents handlers, dogs, and veterinary support, from all military service branches (Army, Marines, Navy, Air Force, and Coast Guard) that have made up the Military Working Dog program since World War II. The monument grounds include a 3,000 square feet granite plaza, granite pedestals, granite history wall, granite benches and water fountain.
