National Trust Of Fiji
The National Trust of Fiji is a statutory organization in Fiji devoted to conservation of public resources. The trust was created in 1970 by the National Trust for Fiji Act. It administers parks and various historical sites. The parks are Sigatoka Sandunes National Park, Sovi Basin, JH Garrick Memorial Park, Waisali Forest Reserve, Momi Battery Historic Park, and Yaduataba Crested Iguana Sanctuary. The National Trust's primary purposes are preservation of historic and natural resources; promotion and augmentation of the amenities to those resources; conservation of flora and fauna; and provision of access to the historic and natural resources for the public. The conservation movement, also known as nature conservation, is a political, environmental, and social movement that seeks to manage and protect natural resources, including animal, fungus, and plant species as well as their habitat for the future. Conservationists are concerned with leaving the environment in a better state than the condition they found it in. Evidence-based conservation seeks to use high quality scientific evidence to make conservation efforts more effective. Sigatoka Sand Dunes
The Sigatoka Sand Dunes National Park is located at the mouth of the Sigatoka River on the island of Viti Levu in Fiji. They are located approximately 3 km west of the town of Sigatoka. The dunes are the product of erosion in the coastal hinterland and coastal dune forming processes. The extensive dune system covers an area of 650 hectares and comprises a series of parabolic sand dunes. The dunes range from 2060 m tall. The dunes have been forming over thousands of years. Archaeological excavations have uncovered pottery more than 2600 years old, as well as one of the largest burial sites in the Pacific. Evidence of the past is clearly visible throughout the dune system as pottery shards, stone tools, human remains and other archaeological relics continue to be uncovered by natural processes. Sovi Basin
The Sovi Basin is located in Naitasiri Province, on the island of Viti Levu, the largest island in Fiji. Covering approximately 19,600 hectares, the basin is blanketed by a well-preserved tropical lowland forest, which is Fiji's largest and most biologically diverse. Sovi basin resides within the Polynesia/Micronesia biodiversity hotspot, one of 34 hot spots throughout the globe. The site is to be protected in a partnership between Fiji Water and Conservation International. The rainforest, wilderness area and high scenic valley contribute to its national significance as outlined in Fiji's Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan. Yadua Tabu
Yadua Taba (pronounced ) is a volcanic islet in Fiji, an outlier to the northern island of Vanua Levu, and immediately south of the larger island Yadua. Yadua Taba covers an area of 0.7 square kilometres and has a maximum elevation of 100 meters. Yadua Taba is a protected sanctuary for the Fiji Crested Iguana, Brachylophus vitiensis, and also contains a strand of dry littoral forestry, almost completely lost in the rest of Fiji. Landing here is strictly prohibited. In 1979, the Fiji government protected the island when the iguana population was discovered. The sanctuary is of national significance as outlined in Fiji's Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan. Flora is all the plant life present in a particular region or time, generally the naturally occurring (indigenous) native plants.
