Heredia Province
Heredia () is a province of Costa Rica. It is in the north-central part of the country. As a result, the province covers areas as diverse as the agriculture-rich Northern plains to the more metropolitan areas such as the city of Heredia in the Central Valley. It contains several major environmentally important areas such as the Braulio Carrillo National Park and the Sarapiqui River. The capital is the city of Heredia. To the north it borders Nicaragua, to the east is the province Limón, to the south the province San José, and to the west Alajuela. Geography The province covers an area of 2,657 km². The province is home to a variety of environments, including primary forests, tropical dry forests, and montane forests. Demographics In 1850, the province had a population of approximately 13,390. National Road Network Of Costa Rica
National Road Network of Costa Rica ( es, Red Vial Nacional), are a series of numbered road routes that are managed through Costa Rica by the Ministry of Public Works and Transport (MOPT) and its subagency the National Road Council (Conavi). According to the Inter-American Development Bank, in 2019 Costa Rica had the worst road network in Latin America, due to being under maintained, and having structural defects and deterioration in around 49% of the National Primary Routes network. Other countries in the area report an average of 20% in the same metric. There are no high speed express routes but there are some two-lane trunk roads. Potholes are common in primary road routes. Many of the secondary or tertiary road routes are made of gravel or dirt. Sarapiquí is the tenth canton in the province of Heredia in Costa Rica. History The canton was established by law on November 18, 1970. The Sarapiquí River played a very important role in the defense of national sovereignty, because on 10 April 1856, the filibusters under the command of the American William Walker arrived in Costa Rica through the Sarapiquí River, where the battle of Sardinal was fought.
