Tecumseh, Kansas
Tecumseh is an unincorporated community in Shawnee County, Kansas, United States, and situated along the Kansas River. As of the 2020 census, the population of the community and nearby areas was 696. The community and township are both named for the Shawnee chief. History By September 1, 1854, Thomas Stinson platted the townsite of Tecumseh, having settled in the area within the Kansas Territory. It was settled by pro-slavery partisans in the turbulent days of Bleeding Kansas. It temporarily served as the pro-southern capital of the territory and prospered, even having a newspaper. The town's post office opened in March 1855. In 1886, the brick courthouse was sold for and removed. After the Civil War, the town rapidly declined and remained so for the next ninety years. Wakarusa is an unincorporated community in Shawnee County, Kansas, United States. As of the 2020 census, the population of the community and nearby areas was 242. It is located south of downtown Topeka. Wakarusa is also the name of an unincorporated community in adjacent Douglas County, Kansas, 6.6 mi (10.6 km) southwest of downtown Lawrence and the name of the township that includes Lawrence, Kansas. Willard, Kansas
Willard is a city in Shawnee and Wabaunsee counties in the State of Kansas in the United States. As of the 2020 census, the population of the city was 74. History Before 1883, Willard was a tiny community but when the Rock Island Railroad laid tracks through it, Willard became a typical railroad town. In 1887, the Chicago, Kansas and Nebraska Railway built a main line from Topeka through Willard to Herington. The Chicago, Kansas and Nebraska Railway was foreclosed in 1891 and taken over by Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railway, which shut down in 1980 and reorganized as Oklahoma, Kansas and Texas Railroad, merged in 1988 with Missouri Pacific Railroad, merged in 1997 with Union Pacific Railroad. Most locals still refer to this railroad as the "Rock Island". In the early 1920s, Willard boasted a population of over 300 and was a major cattle shipping point for this region. Dover, Kansas
Dover is an Unincorporated area, unincorporated community in Shawnee County, Kansas, United States. It is located southwest of Topeka. History Settlers came in the year 1856. The Sage and Bassett families in Dover came from Somersetshire, Bristol. Dover was made a voting precinct of Auburn Township, October 1, 1860, and in the fall of 1867, was erected into a township. E.M. Hewins was the first trustee; Jacob Haskell and George Harden, justices. The first postmaster was Alfred Sage, appointed in 1862, and the family name, Sage, is still widespread in the area today. The town of Dover was named after Dover, New Hampshire. During its peak years, Dover had a match factory, a wagon making business, two grist mills, two blacksmiths, an inn and stage coach station, livery stable, general store, three cheese factories. Auburn, Kansas
Auburn is a city in Shawnee County, Kansas, United States. As of the 2020 census, the population of the city was 1,273. History 19th century In July 1854, John W. Brown came to this area and found it highly suitable for a homestead. He acquired through bartering with local Indians. He later returned home to Missouri to tell his family and friends about the area. Some returned with him. In 1856, Mr. Brown along with M. C. Dickey, Loring Farnsworth and Henry Fox pre-empted for the purpose of a town. They christened it Brownville, although it was changed in 1857 to present name "Auburn" due to the fact there was another settlement with the same name. This was before the introduction of postal codes. It was located on the California Road and work began at once on the many buildings needed in a town of Brownville's size. Berryton is an unincorporated community in Shawnee County, Kansas, United States. It is located east of the Topeka Regional Airport. History Berryton was laid out in 1888 and named for its two founders, George Washington Berry and his son George Webster Berry. The first post office in Berryton was established in May 1888. In 1912 the town was described as, "a little village of Shawnee county, is a station on the Missouri Pacific R. R., 9 miles southeast of the city of Topeka. It has a money order postoffice with one rural delivery route, and is a trading center for the neighborhood in which it is located. The population in 1910 was 75." Silver Lake, Kansas
Silver Lake is a city in Shawnee County, Kansas, United States. As of the 2020 census, the population of the city was 1,345. History 19th century Silver Lake was founded in 1868. It was named from the lake upon which it was situated. In the spring of 1871, the city of Silver Lake was incorporated. 20th century In 1911, a new six room brick school building replaced the original two room structure and the first high school class was organized. In 1928, that building became the elementary school. In 1952, the high school burned and a new high school was completed in 1953. In 1961, a new elementary school was completed.
