Otego is a town in Otsego County, New York, United States. The population was 3,115 at the 2010 census. The name is a native word meaning "where there is fire." The Town of Otego is on the southern border of the county and contains a village called Otego. The town and village are southwest of Oneonta. History The town was first settled ''circa'' 1775, but few more arrived until after the American Revolution. Tension between ethnic Germans and New Englanders slowed early development. The Town of Otego was formed in 1822 from the Towns of Unadilla and Franklin (in Delaware County) as the "Town of Huntsville." New York State Route 166 (NY 166) is a north–south state highway in Otsego County, New York, in the United States. It extends for from NY 28 in the village of Milford to U.S. Route 20 (US 20) north of the village of Cherry Valley. Much of NY 166's southern portion is near Cooperstown, and various county routes serve as connectors between NY 166 and Cooperstown. In Cherry Valley, NY 166 intersects the former western terminus of the First Great Western Turnpike. After passing under US 20, the road continues as County Route 32, which becomes County Route 82 at the Montgomery County line, north to Sprout Brook in Montgomery County, where it meets NY 163. Middlefield is a town in Otsego County, New York, United States. The population was 2,114 at the 2010 census. The Town of Middlefield is in the northeastern part of the county. It is the largest town by area in the county. History Settlers from Scotland and Ireland moved into this area around 1755. The first settlements were made near Middlefield village, which was formed from the Town of Cherry Valley in 1797. The Phoenix cotton mill was started in 1815, but became a wool mill in 1866. Unadilla is a town in Otsego County, New York, United States. As of the 2010 census, the town had a population of 4,392. The name is derived from an Iroquois word for "meeting place". Unadilla is located in the southwestern corner of the county, southwest of Oneonta. The village of Unadilla is located in the southern part of the town. The mayor of Unadilla is David Welch, as of January 13, 2020. History The first settlement took place ''circa'' 1770 in the area of Sidney (in adjacent Delaware County), followed by Unadilla. Glimmerglass State Park is a state park located north of Cooperstown, in Otsego County, New York. Most of the park is located inside the Town of Springfield. Hartwick, New York
Hartwick is a town located in Otsego County, New York, United States. As of the 2010 census, the town had a population of 2,110. The Town of Hartwick is located in the middle of the county, southwest of the Village of Cooperstown. History The town was named for Lutheran minister John Christopher Hartwick (1714–1796), an early landowner of the town. He bought the area (the Hartwick Patent, granted 1761) that now constitutes the township from the Mohawk Indians in 1763. Discontented with the sparsely settled communities of Palatine Germans in the Mohawk Valley to the north, which Hartwick believed made people immoral, he bought the original Hartwick Patent with the intent to build a "New Jerusalem". Hartwick tried to control development, stipulating that residents look to him as their religious superior. New York State Route 205 (NY 205) is a north–south state highway in central Otsego County, New York, in the United States. It extends from Interstate 88 (I-88) at exit 13 near the city of Oneonta to a junction with NY 28 and NY 80 in the town of Otsego. The latter junction also marks the east end of a overlap between NY 205 and NY 80, from where NY 80 heads southeast to follow NY 28 to Cooperstown. NY 205 is a two-lane highway for its entire length and passes through the towns of Oneonta, Laurens and Hartwick.
