Kimball, West Virginia
Kimball is a town in McDowell County, West Virginia, United States. Per the 2020 census, the population was 145. Kimball was incorporated in 1911 and named for Frederick J. Kimball, a railroad official. Kimball is the site of the first war memorial building erected in memory of the African-American veterans of World War I. History The Kimball mining disaster took place on July 18, 1919 at the Carswell coal mine in Kimball, killing six miners. Initial reports said that 221 men had been killed, but they were trapped by the explosion. A rescue party was able to dig through the wreckage, allowing 215 to return alive to the surface. Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all land. The town is on the Norfolk Southern Railway (former Norfolk and Western) network. Jenkinjones is an unincorporated community and coal town in McDowell County, West Virginia, United States. It lies on the western flanks of Stone Ridge near the border with Tazewell County, Virginia. Maybeury, West Virginia
Maybeury is a census-designated place (CDP) in McDowell County, West Virginia, United States, located on U.S. Route 52 between Northfork and Bramwell. As of the 2010 census, its population was 234. Maybeury was built by Shamokin Coal & Coke Co. ''circa'' 1890, and it was named for coal operators James May and William Beury. History In 1890, it was the largest town in McDowell County, with a population of 875. This was due to the coal mining start-ups in the town. Maybeury was the fifth largest town/city south of the state capital, Charleston, and listed as the 31st largest town/city in the state. John F. West Virginia Route 161 is a north–south state highway located entirely within McDowell County, West Virginia. The southern terminus of the route is at West Virginia Route 16 in Bishop less than from the Virginia state line. The northern terminus is at U.S. Route 52 in Elkhorn.
