Mississippi Highway 7 (MS 7) runs generally north–south from the Tennessee state line in Benton County to Belzoni, Mississippi. It travels approximately , serving Humphreys, Leflore, Carroll, Grenada, Yalobusha, Lafayette, Marshall, and Benton counties while serving several points of interest, including Florewood River Plantation State Park, the University of Mississippi, and Wall Doxey State Park. Rust College is a private historically black college in Holly Springs, Mississippi. Founded in 1866, it is the second-oldest private college in the state. Abbeville is a town in Lafayette County, Mississippi. The population was 419 at the 2010 census. History Abbeville was originally settled by pioneers from Abbeville, South Carolina in the 1830s. They lived in apparent peace with the local Chickasaw Indians, whose Chief Toby Tubby owned and operated a ferry along the Memphis-Oxford trade route. During the American Civil War, Abbeville was almost completely destroyed in the Vicksburg Campaign. Abbeville post office was established September 28, 1843, with John B. Davis as first postmaster. Holly Springs is a city in, and the county seat of, Marshall County, Mississippi, United States, near the southern border of Tennessee. Near the Mississippi Delta, the area was developed by European Americans for cotton plantations and was dependent on enslaved Africans. After the Civil War, many freedmen continued to work in agriculture as sharecroppers and tenant farmers. As the county seat, the city is a center of trade and court sessions. Thistledome, a.k.a. Horn-McAuley House and Chalmers/Horn House is a historic house in Byhalia, Mississippi, USA. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places as part of the Byhalia Historic District, it is the only remaining Antebellum residence in Byhalia. Location It is located at 118 Highway 309 South in Byhalia, a small town in Northern Mississippi. History The house was built in 1840 by Joseph Chalmers, the District Attorney for Marshall County. He was the father of James Ronald Chalmers and H.H. Chalmers. He was also the Uncle to Jefferson Davis, who mentored with his uncle. It was designed as a two-storey, hip-roofed house. It was purchased by E. B. Horn in 1900. He paid $10.00 down in December 1899 and remaining balance of $690 on January 1, 1900.
