''The Decatur Daily'' is a daily (five days a week) newspaper serving Decatur, Alabama and the Tennessee Valley in the North Alabama area of the United States. As of September 30, 2006, it had an average daily circulation of 20,824 and a Sunday circulation of 23,840. Along with ''The Anniston Star'', it is one of only two family-owned daily newspapers remaining in Alabama. History It was first published on February 26, 1912, under the banner of ''The Decaturs Daily'', serving the towns of Decatur and New Decatur. The National Historic Landmarks in Alabama represent Alabama's history from the precolonial era, through the Civil War, the Civil Rights Movement, and the Space Age. There are 39 National Historic Landmarks (NHLs) in Alabama, which are located in 18 of the state's 67 counties. Five of the NHLs in the state have military significance, eight are significant examples of a particular architectural style, six are archaeological sites, seven played a role in the African American struggle for civil rights, and five are associated with the development of the U.S. Space Program. Triana, Alabama
Triana () is a town in Madison County, Alabama, United States, and is included in the Huntsville-Decatur Combined Statistical Area. As of the 2020 census, the population of the town was 2,890, up from 496 at the 2010 census. History Triana was originally incorporated on November 13, 1819, as the second town in Madison County. It purportedly was named after Rodrigo de Triana, the crewman who first sighted land while sailing with Christopher Columbus on their first voyage to the Americas. For a time in the 19th century, it was a thriving riverport on the Tennessee River prior to the construction of the railroads. Its incorporation later lapsed and it was reincorporated on July 13, 1964, with the help of Clyde Foster, who later became Triana's mayor. Until the 2020 census, it was the only incorporated community in Madison County with a majority black population. Meridianville is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in Madison County, Alabama, United States, and is included in the Huntsville-Decatur Combined Statistical Area. As of the 2020 census, the population of the CDP was 8,209. Geography Meridianville is located in northern Madison County at (34.869312, -86.578373). It is north of Huntsville and east of Harvest and is bordered by Hazel Green to the north and Moores Mill to the east. It is the third largest community in Madison County by population after Huntsville and Madison. New Market, Alabama
New Market is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in Madison County, Alabama, Madison County, Alabama, United States, and is included in the Huntsville-Decatur Combined Statistical Area. As of the 2020 United States census, 2020 census, the population of the CDP was 1,543. Although it was the first area settled in Madison County, the town has never been incorporated. Maysville, also known as Mayville, is an Unincorporated area, unincorporated community in eastern Madison County, Alabama, United States. Maysville borders Ryland, Alabama, Ryland to the West, and is close to the Town of Gurley, Alabama, Gurley to the East Demographics Maysville appeared on the 1890 U.S. Census with a population of 218. This was the only time it appeared on the census rolls. History Maysville was probably named for the May family, who were early settlers of the area. Gurley, Alabama
Gurley is a town in Madison County, Alabama, United States, and is included in the Huntsville-Decatur Combined Statistical Area. As of the 2020 census, the population of the town was 816. History The community takes its name from the Gurley family, who settled in the area in 1817. The town gradually formed around a water and coaling stop of the Memphis & Charleston Railroad and was originally known as "Gurley's Tank". In 1866, the post office opened, and the name was changed to "Gurleysville"; it was later shortened back to Gurley. Gurley was incorporated in 1891 with 250 residents. Soon after, the population peaked at 1,000. The business district was nearly destroyed by fire in 1923, when a bucket brigade was able to save only two businesses. Most of the town is now included in the Gurley Historic District, which was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2004.
