Utah State Route 36
State Route 36 (SR-36) is a highway in northern Utah connecting US-6 in northern Juab County to I-80 in northern Tooele County. Route description From its southern terminus west of Eureka, SR-36 heads northwest until Vernon, where it turns north. It continues this general direction, eventually heading more to the northeast, until the northern terminus at Lake Point, where it intersects Interstate 80. From the junction with SR-73 north to the terminus at I-80, SR-36 is included as part of the National Highway System. Silver City, Utah
Silver City is a ghost town located at the mouth of Dragon Canyon on the west flank of the East Tintic Mountains in northeast Juab County in central Utah, United States. It was a silver mining town approximately south-southwest of Salt Lake City. This area was considered part of the Tintic Mining District and also produced bismuth, copper, gold, and lead. Settlement began with the first mining strikes here in 1869. Silver City was inhabited until 1930, after the mines played out. Jesse Knight, known as the "Mormon Wizard" for his ability to find ore easily, decided to build a smelter in Silver City because it had the flattest ground in all of the Tintic Mining District. Silver City had several mines in 1890, but the mines hit water and were abandoned. Now there is little left other than a few holes where mines were, and a number of tailings piles. Knightsville, Utah
Knightsville (also known as Knightville) is a ghost town located in the East Tintic Mountains on the northern slope of Godiva Mountain, approximately east of Eureka, in the northeastern corner of Juab County in central Utah, United States. A silver mining camp, Knightsville was established and operated as a company town by local mining entrepreneur Jesse Knight. The town was inhabited from 1896 until approximately 1940. History Jesse Knight came to the Tintic Mining District in 1896, with little money and no previous mining knowledge or experience. Against the advice of experienced geologists, he sank a mine shaft that quickly reached a rich body of ore. In response to those who had doubted, he named it the ''Humbug Mine''. Opening about a half dozen mines in the east Tintic area, Knight became one of the region's richest mine owners. Mammoth is an unincorporated community and semi-ghost town in northeastern Juab County, Utah, United States. Description The town lies in Mammoth Canyon on the west flank of the East Tintic Mountains, approximately west of Mammoth Peak, at an elevation of .USGS 7.5 min. Quadrangle maps: Eureka and Tintic Junction It is about south of Eureka and east of the Tintic Junction. Mammoth was founded ''circa'' 1870 during the boom and bust mining cycle of the American West. The name for the town comes from the Mammoth Mine located near the area. History The Mammoth Mine was discovered around the same time as the settlement of Eureka in February 1870. Miners rushed in and began a boomtown. The area was remote and the environment harsh; no water was to be found nearby. Callao, Utah
Callao ( ) is a community in northern Snake Valley, along the border of Juab and Tooele counties, Utah, United States. Description The community was part of the original Pony Express overland route, and was first called Willow Springs in 1860. E. W. Tripp, his wife, and their son were the first to establish residence there, in 1870. In 1895 it was decided that ''Willow Springs'' was too common a name, and a new name would be chosen. The name ''Callao'' was chosen because of a resemblance to Callao, Peru, suggested by an old grizzled 1890s prospector in the region who was working out of Gold Hill to the north. The National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) is the United States federal government's official list of districts, sites, buildings, structures and objects deemed worthy of preservation for their historical significance or "great artistic value".
