National Historic Site (NHS) is a designation for an officially recognized area of national historic significance in the United States. Philip, South Dakota
Philip is a town in and the county seat of rural Haakon County, South Dakota, United States. The population was 759 at the 2020 census. History Philip was laid out in 1907 when the Chicago and North Western Railway was extended to that point. It was incorporated in 1908. In 1914, Philip was designated seat of the newly formed Haakon County. The city was named for James "Scotty" Philip; the local high school mascot is the Scotch terrier, or "Scottie", in his honor. Interior (Lakota: ''makȟóšiča otȟúŋwahe''; "Badlands village") is a town in Jackson County, South Dakota, United States. The population was 65 at the 2020 census. Interior got its start in 1907 when the Milwaukee Railroad was extended to that point. History Norwegian immigrants George and Louis Johnson moved from Chamberlain, South Dakota to the banks of the White River just north of the Pine Ridge Reservation in 1883 to establish a way-station for freighting between Chamberlain and the Black Hills. In 1886, the area was connected by rail to Gordon, Nebraska. In 1891, the former way-station was called Black with Mary Johnson as its first postmaster. In 1893, the town was renamed "Interior" by George Johnson because he did not think the name "Black" fit the description of the White River that surrounded the town. South Dakota Highway 240 (SD 240), also signed as the Badlands Loop, is a state highway in southeastern Pennington and northwestern Jackson counties in South Dakota, United States, that travels through the eastern portion of Badlands National Park. Route description SD 240 begins in Wall at exit 110 of Interstate 90 (I-90). It travels south to Badlands National Park, where it turns southeast. At the Badlands Headquarters at Cedar Pass, the highway turns northeast, ending at exit 131 of I-90 near Cactus Flat. Because the highway enters a national park, there is an entrance fee charged along the highway at either entrance to the park. The fee is $30 per passenger vehicle, good for 7 days.
