Stagecoach
A stagecoach is a four-wheeled public transport coach used to carry paying passengers and light packages on journeys long enough to need a change of horses. It is strongly sprung and generally drawn by four horses although some versions are drawn by six horses. Commonly used before steam-powered rail transport was available, a stagecoach made long scheduled trips using ''stage stations'' or posts where the stagecoach's horses would be replaced by fresh horses. The business of running stagecoaches or the act of journeying in them was known as staging. Hayfield, Minnesota
Hayfield is a city in Dodge County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 1,340 at the 2010 census. History The Hayfield branch of the U.S. Post Office has been in operation since 1885. Hayfield was incorporated in 1896. Hayfield Township was organized March 30, 1872, having previously been a part of Vernon. Its name was adopted from a township of Crawford County in northwestern Pennsylvania. The city of Hayfield, sections 15 and 22, was incorporated January 7, 1896; it had a station of the Chicago Great Western Railroad; the Vernon Co-operative Creamery near Hayfield was the oldest farmer-owned creamery in the state. Wasioja, Minnesota
Wasioja is an unincorporated community in Wasioja Township, Dodge County, Minnesota, United States. The community is located near the junction of Dodge County Roads 9 and 16. The South Branch Middle Fork of the Zumbro River and Dodge Center Creek meet at Wasioja. Nearby places include Dodge Center, Mantorville, and Kasson. History Wasioja was settled in 1854 and platted in 1856. A post office was established at Wasioja in 1856, and remained in operation until 1911. Wasioja is the native Sioux-language name for the Zumbro River. By 1860, the community's population had reached 1,000, its economy driven by limestone quarries, lumber, and agriculture. In 1860 the Minnesota Seminary was opened on the outskirts of town. The town's fortunes were ruined by three separate events that led to its abandonment by most of its population. The Italianate style was a distinct 19th-century phase in the history of Classical architecture. Like Palladianism and Neoclassicism, the Italianate style drew its inspiration from the models and architectural vocabulary of 16th-century Italian Renaissance architecture, synthesising these with picturesque aesthetics. Arnold Blanch
Arnold Blanch (June 4, 1896 – October 3, 1968), was born and raised in Mantorville, Minnesota. He was an American modernism, American modernist painter, etcher, illustrator, lithographer, muralist, printmaker and art teacher. Life His modernist paintings are associated with the Social Realism, Social Realist movement. Blanch met his first wife the painter Lucile Blanch, (born Lucile Lundquist), at the Minneapolis School of Art. After the end of World War I, Lucile and Arnold Blanch moved to New York City and enrolled at the Art Students League of New York, studying with John French Sloan, John Sloan, Robert Henri, Kenneth Hayes Miller and Boardman Robinson. Eventually by 1923 they settled in Woodstock, New York, which was then beginning to become an important art colony for young artists. Cordenio Severance
Cordenio Arnold Severance (1862—1925) was an American lawyer from Minnesota. He co-founded the American Law Institute and served as president of the American Bar Association. His wife, known as Mrs. Cordenio A. Severance published the book ''Indian Legends of Minnesota'' and survived the sinking of the RMS ''Republic'' in 1909. Biography Severance was born in Mantorville, Minnesota in 1862. He attended Carleton College from 1877 to 1880 and then read law from 1882 to 1883 in Kasson, Minnesota. He was admitted to the state bar and by 1887, he had entered into partnership in St. Paul with former U.S. Attorney and Governor Cushman Davis and future U.S. Senator and Secretary of State Frank Kellogg. Hubbell House
The Hubbell House in Mantorville, Minnesota, United States, is one of the oldest working restaurants in the state of Minnesota. It is a contributing property to the Mantorville Historic District, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The restaurant is located on Mantorville Avenue (Minnesota State Highway 57), which runs through Mantorville. The building was originally constructed in 1854, but was rebuilt in 1856. History The first structure deemed "The Hubbell House" was built in 1854, four years before Minnesota became a state in 1858, by John Hubbell. It was a two-room log building, and was known by mail carriers and stagecoach travelers as a rest stop along their journeys.
