Mountainburg, Arkansas
Mountainburg is a town in Crawford County, Arkansas, United States. It is part of the Fort Smith, Arkansas- Oklahoma Metropolitan Statistical Area. As of the 2010 census the population was 631. Mountainburg was laid out in 1883 when the St. Louis–San Francisco Railway was extended to that point. Geography Mountainburg is located along U.S. Route 71, and thrived when this road was the main route in northwest Arkansas. Since the construction of Interstate 540 (now Interstate 49) to the west, it has been a sleepier community. The city park in downtown Mountainburg has since 1980 hosted two large dinosaur models. Lake Fort Smith State Park, which is situated on the western side of the Lake Fort Smith, is located north of Mountainburg. The ''Southwest Times Record'' is a daily newspaper in Fort Smith, Arkansas and covers 10 counties in western Arkansas and eastern Oklahoma. It is owned and published by Gannett. History The Times Record began as three separate papers: the Fort Smith Times, the Fort Smith News Record and the Southwest American. The Fort Smith Times began publishing first, in December 1884, as an afternoon newspaper. The Fort Smith News Record was established in spring 1893 and also was an afternoon publication. The Southwest American, a morning daily, began publishing in 1907. In July 1909, the Times and the News Record merged as the Fort Smith Times Record. In 1920, boyhood friends John S. Winslow, Arkansas
Winslow (formerly Summit Home) is a city in southern Washington County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 391 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Northwest Arkansas region. History A stagecoach stop for many years, the community now known as Winslow first received a post office on December 11, 1876, known as Summit Home. The town grew significantly upon completion of the Winslow Tunnel, which allowed the St. Louis – San Francisco Railway (Frisco) to run through the steep Boston Mountains of south Washington County. The town was renamed to Winslow on August 3, 1881 in honor of Edward F. Winslow, president of the Frisco Railroad. U.S. Route 71 or U.S. Highway 71 (US 71) is a major north–south United States highway that extends for over 1500 miles (2500 km) in the central United States. This original 1926 route has remained largely unchanged by encroaching Interstate highways.
