Cooke County is a county in the U.S. state of Texas. At the 2020 census, its population was 41,668. The county seat is Gainesville. The county was founded in 1848 and organized the next year. It is named for William Gordon Cooke, a soldier during the Texas Revolution. It is a part of the Texoma region. Cooke County comprises the Gainesville, TX micropolitan statistical area, which is also included in the Dallas–Fort Worth, TX- OK combined statistical area. Recorded Texas Historic Landmark
Recorded Texas Historic Landmark (RTHL) is a designation awarded by the Texas Historical Commission for historically and architecturally significant properties in the U.S. state of Texas. RTHL is a legal designation and the highest honor the state can bestow on a historic structure. Purchase and display of a historical marker is a required component of the RTHL designation process. Because it is a legal designation, owners of RTHL-designated structures must give 60 days' notice before any alterations are made to the exterior of the structure. Changes that are unsympathetic may result in removal of the designation and historical marker. More than 3,600 RTHL structures are spread throughout the state. The Texas Historical Commission is an agency dedicated to historic preservation within the state of Texas. It administers the National Register of Historic Places for sites in Texas. Gainesville, Texas
Gainesville is a city in and the county seat of Cooke County, Texas, United States. Its population was 16,002 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Texoma region and is an important Agri-business center. History Founded in 1850, the city of Gainesville was established on a tract of land donated by Mary E. Clark. City residents called their new community "Liberty", which proved short-lived, as a Liberty, Texas, already existed. One of the original settlers of Cooke County, Colonel William Fitzhugh, suggested that the town be named after General Edmund Pendleton Gaines. Gaines, a United States general under whom Fitzhugh had served, had been sympathetic with the Texas Revolution. The first hint of prosperity arrived with the Butterfield Overland Mail stagecoach in September 1858, bringing freight, passengers, and mail. In 1860, Cooke County voted against secession. Lindsay, Cooke County, Texas
Lindsay is a primarily German Catholic city in Cooke County, Texas, United States, along U.S. Route 82. The population was 1,018 at the 2010 census, up from 788 at the 2000 census. It was estimated at 1,113 in 2018. History In 1887, the Missouri–Kansas–Texas Railroad constructed a line from Gainesville to Henrietta that passed through the site that would become Lindsay. The story of its founding closely resembles that of its neighbors along the railway such as Muenster. In 1891, Anton and August Flusche arranged for transfer of along the railway to found a new town, which they named after a local judge. They attracted several German Catholic settlers in the following years. The date of Lindsay's founding is officially recognized as March 25, 1892, when the first mass was held; however, Lindsay was not formally incorporated until 1959. Era, Texas
Era is an unincorporated community in Cooke County, Texas, United States. It's a small farming town in the southwest portion of the county. Era was founded in 1878, after Judge J.M. Lindsay donated 6 acres for a school. The town was named for Era Hargrove, the daughter of an early settler. Today, the community of Era has a school, post office, volunteer fire department, 2 mechanic shops, a welding shop, a hair cutting salon, a feed store and a convenience store with a Subway. About 7 miles west of Era, there is the Liberman Broadcasting Tower Era, one of earth's tallest structures, and as of May 2007 was the tallest structure in Texas. The tower is named for its proximity to Era, though it is much closer to Rosston and Leo. The Era Independent School District serves area students.
