Dundee, New York
Dundee is a village in Yates County, New York, United States. The population was 1,725 at the 2010 census. The name was taken from Dundee, the city in Scotland with a population of 148,260. The Village of Dundee is in the Town of Starkey. The village is in the Finger Lakes Region of New York, halfway between Elmira and Geneva. Dundee Airport (D48) is located northeast of the village. History The community was known early by the name "Plainview". At first, the village did not thrive due to competition from another neighboring community, "Eddytown", but eventually prevailed over its rival. Around 1834, residents began to seek a new name for the village and, persuaded by a native of Scotland, named the village "Dundee". He then moved to Illinois and persuaded the natives of his new home to rename their community "Dundee". In 1859, 1860, and 1861, the village was severely damaged by fires. Torrey, New York
Torrey is a town in Yates County, New York, United States. The population was 1,282 at the 2010 census. The name is taken from that of early county political leader Henry Torrey. The Town of Torrey is in the east central part of the county and is south of Geneva. The town of Torrey is unrelated to the 10,000+ acre Torrey Farms, located in Elba and Potter, which is one of the largest farms in New York. History The town was first settled around 1788 by members of the Society of Universal Friends, a religious group led by a former Quaker preacher known as the Public Universal Friend. The Crooked Lake Canal, opened in 1833, ran across the south part of Torrey. The town was formed on November 14, 1851 from parts of the Town of Benton and Town of Milo. Torrey was the last town formed in the county. Rushville is a village in Ontario and Yates Counties in the U.S. state of New York. The population was 655 in the 2019 American Community Survey. Most of the Village of Rushville is within the Town of Potter in Yates County and a small part is in the Town of Gorham in Ontario County. It is one of two villages in Ontario County that is split between two townships and the only village in Ontario split between two counties. History Rushville was originally called Federal Hollow. The town was called this because many its initial settlers favored the Federalist political party, and it is located in one Canandaigua Lake's many hollows, or valleys. Elias Gilbert was the first settler in Rushville, also opening one of the first saw mills on the West River in 1800. Federal Hollow became Rushvile in 1819, when it got a Post Station. Barrington is a town in Yates County, New York, United States. The population was 1,681 at the 2010 census. The Town of Barrington is located in the south part of the county and is south of Geneva. History The first settler arrived around 1800, but no others arrived for several years. The land of the town was once part of the Phelps and Gorham Purchase. The town was established in 1822 while still part of Steuben County from the Towns of Reading and Wayne. In 1826, Barrington was made part of Yates County, a year after the creation of the county. In 1865, a mineral spring was discovered in the south part of the county, leading to the development of Crystal Spring. Branchport is a hamlet in the town of Jerusalem in Yates County, New York, United States. It is a "crossroads community" which contains about 85 dwellings, six stores, two churches, a library and a firehouse. The name "Branchport" comes from its location at the north end of the west branch of the Y shaped Keuka Lake. Keuka Lake
Keuka Lake ( ) is one of the major Finger Lakes in the U.S. state of New York. It is unusual because it is Y-shaped, in contrast to the long and narrow shape of the other Finger Lakes. Because of its shape, it was referred to in the past as Crooked Lake. ''Keuka'' means "canoe landing" in the Iroquois language and "lake with an elbow" in the Seneca language. Description The Y-shaped Keuka Lake empties into another Finger Lake, Seneca Lake, through a stream called Keuka Lake Outlet at the lake's northeastern end in Penn Yan.
