Forestburgh, New York
Forestburgh is a town in Sullivan County, New York, United States. The population was 808 at the 2020 census. It is where the Neversink River enters the Neversink Gorge and flows over High Falls. The ZIP code of Forestburgh, New York is 12777. The Town of Forestburgh is in the south-central part of the county. History The town was formed from parts of the Towns of Mamakating and Thompson in 1837. Forestburgh's main industries in its early years were tanning, quarrying and lumbering. The mountains on either side of Bushkill Creek contained quarries of flagging, curbing and building stone (also known as bluestone). The largest of these was Paradise Quarry in Oakland Valley. Stone from this quarry was used to construct the Episcopal Church in Monticello. Many of the old sidewalks in New York City were said to have come from this area. Liberty is a town in Sullivan County, New York, United States. The population was 9,885 at the 2010 census. The town contains a village also named Liberty. The village is bisected by New York State Route 52 (NY 52) and NY 55, and is crossed by NY 17. History The town of Liberty area is credited with providing 303 men who fought in the Revolution. Liberty was carved originally from the then large township of Lumberland and was itself at this time so large that it included the present Towns of Callicoon and Fremont. The Town today covers 85 square miles. When the first settlers came to this area, known as the Blue Mountain country, they settled to the Northwest of the present village at the existing Revonah Lake formerly known as Broadhead Pond. Dundas Castle
Dundas Castle is a 15th-century castle, with substantial 19th-century additions by William Burn, in the Dalmeny parish of West Lothian, Scotland. Roscoe is a hamlet (and census-designated place) in Sullivan County, New York, United States. The population was 541 at the 2010 census. Roscoe is in the southwest part of the Town of Rockland, adjacent to New York State Route 17. It is named for New York Senator Roscoe Conkling. Roscoe calls itself "Trout Town, USA." Minisink Ford is a hamlet on the Delaware River, fifteen miles northwest of Port Jervis. It is in the town of Highland, Sullivan County, New York, United States. History "Minisink" once referred to a vast area stretching all the way from Minisink Ford to the Delaware Water Gap. In 1800, the Town of Minisink was given its present boundaries, thirty miles southwest of Minisink Ford. During the American Revolution in 1779, Minisink Ford was the site of the Battle of Minisink, in which 40–50 settlers were killed in an engagement with a band of Iroquois and Loyalists under Mohawk chief and Colonel Joseph Brant. Cochecton () is a town located in west-central Sullivan County, New York, United States. The population was 1,372 at the 2010 census. The name is derived from the lenape word "cushetunk" meaning "place of red stone hills". Callicoon is a town in Sullivan County, New York, United States. The population was 3,057 at the 2010 census. The town is in the northwestern part of the county. History The town was formed in 1842 from the Town of Liberty. The original spelling of the name was "Collikoon." This name is said to signify "turkey" in both Dutch and Choctaw. The Dutch word for turkey is ''kalkoen.'' Although the Choctaw have a word for turkey, ''cholokloha'', the people did not occupy territory anywhere near here, but traditionally lived in the Deep South.
