Ohio State Route 18
State Route 18 (SR 18) is an east–west highway in northern Ohio. It is the sixth longest state route in the state. Its western terminus is at the Indiana state line near Hicksville, where the route continues in Indiana as State Road 8, and its eastern terminus is at State Route 91 in Akron. History State Route 18 was an original state highway that went from Norwalk to the Pennsylvania state line. The route was extended to the Indiana state line in 1926. Until 1950, it was one of a very few Ohio routes to end at two state lines. State Route 18's extension to the Indiana state line originally overlapped State Route 2 from the line to Hicksville. The ''Record-Courier'' is an American daily newspaper in Portage County, Ohio, based in Kent. It is published by Gannett of Tysons Corner, Virginia, after having previously been owned by Dix Communications of Kent and Wooster, Ohio, until 2017. History The historical origins of the modern ''Record-Courier'' begin with the ''Ohio Star,'' which was first printed in 1830. In 1854 it merged with the ''Home Companion and Whig'' to become the ''Portage County Democrat,'' which supported the Free Soil Party and the Know Nothings. As those views became tied to the Republican Party, the paper supported the Union in the American Civil War and changed its name to the ''Portage Co. Republican Democrat'' after the war in 1868. In 1882, the paper bought the ''Portage County Republican'' and merged the two to create the ''Ravenna Republican.'' Franklin Township is a civil township located in Portage County, Ohio, United States. It is located along the Cuyahoga River in Northeast Ohio on the western edge of the county. The 2010 Census found 5,527 people in the township and the 2020 census recorded 6,283 people. The township is part of the Akron Metropolitan Statistical Area and the larger Cleveland–Akron–Canton Combined Statistical Area. Garrettsville, Ohio
Garrettsville is a village in northeastern Portage County, Ohio, United States. The population was 2,449 at the 2020 census. It is part of the Akron metropolitan area. The village was formed from portions of Hiram, Nelson, and Freedom townships in the Connecticut Western Reserve. History Colonel John Garrett III purchased 300 acres (1 214 062 m2) of land in Nelson Township, Portage County, Ohio in 1803, the year Ohio became a state. The land was purchased for the price of $1,313, or about $4.40 per acre. In July of the following year, he settled on this land with his family and two slave girls, 6 and 10 years old. These settlers constructed a grist mill, which was to open in January 1806. In this month, however, Garrett died. In 1806, the Cleveland-Pittsburgh Road was constructed near Garrett's mill. Mantua Township is one of the eighteen townships of Portage County, Ohio, United States. The 2000 census found 4,661 people in the township. Name and history Mantua Township was named in commemoration of Mantua, Italy, which in 1796 was besieged by Napoleon, during the Napoleonic Wars. It is the only Mantua Township statewide. Government The township is governed by a three-member board of trustees, who are elected in November of odd-numbered years to a four-year term beginning on the following January 1. Two are elected in the year after the presidential election and one is elected in the year before it. There is also an elected township fiscal officer, who serves a four-year term beginning on April 1 of the year after the election, which is held in November of the year before the presidential election.
